Why is the PR so low?

I know that PR has nothing to do with traffic and I rank higher then sites with PR even 2 above me, but why is it that I have 20,000 more backlinks then some competitor sites, yet they have a PR5 and my main site remains on PR3.

It is not a big deal to me, but I would like to understand the PR equations a little better, is it something I have done on my site, or is it just that PR5 and PR6 sites (around 8 of them sitewide) really isnt enough to pull the PR above PR3. I do feel slightly cheated on the recent update as I didnt move again from last update and I was sure I would move up to PR5, yet this did not happen.

Once again, I know its not the end of the world, as many of you will point out. I know the significance that PR has and that a PR means nothing, yet still, what gives.

You can find some competitior sites to gauge their PR, then take a look at Yahoo links: or Google: links to do a comparison.

    Other Competitors:
    http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=game+servers&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

    My site is this one

One good case study is to compare it to this site, its ran by someone else I know from the US, no relation other then name. Here Compare the links and PR on them.

Google shows 48k backlinks on its webmaster tools for my UK site.

Can someone explain if you have the knowledge to give a good reason why the PR is so low.
If its required I can provide the link to 5 PR5+/PR6 sites on related topics that link site wide to my site.

pr is not even going to happen in April...just down right sad.

Waiting and waiting till Mid April and now going to wait some more.

Boldy, that site, predicted PR of my site will be a 3.3 it said. We'll see how accurate it is :) But I think that tool is like anyother tool, not 100% accurate at all.

I have not seen any change yet so hopefully your site is in the pregress of PR increasing and get to PR5 soon. ;)

Its very common for webmasters to overestimate the quality of their backlinks. Most of what I'm going to say here has been said here many many times, and yet it doesn't seem to get absorbed into the pool of common knowledge. But let's dive in anyway.

If we assume that the fundamental principles of the original PageRank formula are still in place, it makes evaluating the value of a link very simple. Most people boil it down to the following: the amount of PageRank value passed on by any link is the PageRank score of the page on which the link originates divided by the number of links on that page. This simple formula works very well, especially if you keep in mind that PageRank is an exponential scale, not arithmatic. It makes the analysis of any link very easy if you understand all of the implications.

The formula I describe says its essential to know several things about the page on which a link resides in order to judge its quality in terms of PageRank. First, obviously the page must be indexed in order for the links it contains to be considered by Google at all. Second, the page must have a positive PageRank score. The current PageRank of any page is impossible to judge with absolute certainty since the Toolbar PageRank meter data can be several months out of date. But if the page is in the index, you can assume it has at least a fractional PageRank score even if the Toolbar shows a score of 0. And if it is 0, the links on that page are of minimal quality at best. But if the Toolbar shows any green at all, you've got a chance at the links it contains being very helpful. That's where we come to the second part of the formula - counting the number of links on the page. The formula tells us that the more links on a page, the lower the quality of each link in terms of PageRank. This means that just because a page has a good PageRank score, you can't assume that a link from such a page will carry a great deal of weight. You have to actually do the math. A link on a page with a lower PageRank score but containing relatively few links can easily pass more PageRank value than a link on a page with a higher PageRank score containing a very large number of links.

Firefox (and its predecessor Netscape Navigator) makes it easy to get a quick feel for the number of links on a page. Just load the page in the browser and select Tools-->Page Info and click on the Links tab. While it doesn't actually count the links, you can make a reasonable guess based on the length of the list of links. I've written my own tool to do actual counts, and I'm sure that you can find online tools that will do the same job. Its amazing how many links some pages contain. Template-driven pages are notoriously heavy with internal links. Its a back-handed way of hoarding PageRank, whether intentional or not.

Evaluating a link for its potential PageRank value alone is not going to tell you everything about its ability to improve your rankings, but PageRank is still fundamential in how Google treats your site in many ways so you simply can't ignore it and hope to do well on a consistent basis.

    Very good and quality post.
Thanks, but, when you say links, to you apply that to both internal links and external offsite links?

Did you look at the site links I have received

    I will elaborate:

Your question was regarding PR. Most would agree that PR is only affected by backlinks. Therefore I indicated that you might want to take another look at your backlinks.

Why did I mention the quality and quantity of backlinks?

    1. Highly related backlinks from your niche are weighted High.
    2. Links with a high PR are weighted High.
    3. PR is shared with all other outgoing links on the page (something Rainborick was explaining).
    4. Your site linking to bad neighbourhoods will hurt your PR.
    5. Contextual links are weighted higher than text links.
    6. Reciprocal links are weighted lower than one way links.
    7. Some argue that site wide links are less valuable than a single link as google sees this as link spaming.

Im sure the list goes on.

Now lets move on to relating PR to the second part of your question regarding the relationship between PR and serp. First of all, the relationship between PR and serp is only loosely related to the ranking you receive in the search engines. It’s a frequent occurrence to see lower PR sites outranking higher PR ones and here is why:

A very important factor: link anchor text.

Every time the anchor text of a backlink contains your targeted keywords, you will move a fraction up the serps. 20 000 links with related keywords in anchor text (no matter what quality the link is) will give you a good boost in the serps.

Next, On page optimisation. If you look at some of the higher PR sites you are outranking, take a look at the number of targeted keywords you have in your title and description compared to them. Look for keywords in the URL. U have “gaming” which google knows is related to “game” thereby giving you another boost in the serp. The there are all the other standard on page optimisation techniques to consider which I wont go into.

The reason you outrank some higher PR sites might be any number of these factors or as suggested it might simply be because your PR ahs not been updated yet. No one is going to be able to tell you for sure its up to you to make an educated guess.

Now don’t worry about the flaming and negative rep you gave me for me taking the little time I had to go out of my way to read your post and try to give you some help. I forgive you. Perhaps you were having a bad day. I can relate to that.

Please remember not everyone on this forum has the time to explain everything as thoroughly as possible, I was pressed for time so I tried to give you a hint to help you in the right direction.

Hello, thanks for the quality post.

    1. Sitewide on 5 PR4+ sites and then here are some highly related. All with good anchor text:
www.clantemplates.com www.hl2files.com www.csnation.net I would rank these as highly relevant.
    4. There are no outgoing links on my site that are sitewide and any outgoing links are all rel=nofollow
    5. Contextual links?
    6. I dont participate in Reciprocals, but I was aware of that, the main reason I dont participate actually.
    7. Yeah I heard that quite a bit, but I would disagree, its likely tht 600 links dont have the same as 600x sitewide, but I dont think 600 links have less impact.

    I dont understand you sorry.

'i have check your backlinks which are not more '

The point of this post, is that competitiors who have less backlinks have higher page rank. (But I still rank higher in SERP). I know PR isnt everything anyway, I dont even look at PR for ranking. This isjust for curiousity purposes.

to keep it simple , i think some of the links you get from other site are not worthy enough .

Again , maybe the other sites , ur rivals , maybe using keyword rich content , so that google gets them better indexed and ranked . so try with nice reply and keyword contents
