Why is SEO a ongoing process?

After getting some perm links, blog posting, social bookmarking, directory submissions, etc for a month, what is needed on the next months to keep your position in google/yahoo/msn?

What would happen if you just do all of the above for 1 month and then stop? Do you lose ranking immediately?

What are your thoughts on WHY seo is a ongoing process and what do YOU do every month to keep your rank?

SEO is an ongoing process because if you have a forum for example the content will be changing all of the time and that content should and can be optimised for the SE's. I dont think you lose ranking, but I believe others may get ahead of you if you were to stop with gaining backlinks etc

It is a dynamic process and changes with the efforts of others as well.

So, if you stop doing things, other people's efforts will have more pronounced effect on the end result...as simple as that!

I have a good example here. I was backlinking for a client - got him to the first page (#8). I stopped for a while - he slipped to the second page (1st spot).

So yes, at least w/ one way links - you have to keep it up. Especially in a competitive niche.

In a competitive niche, your competition is always doing SEO and working hard. If you stop, you'll be possibly losing ranking to them and will, most likely, have to play catch up in the long run. I control many top positions in the SERPs, and I can guarantee you that in a competitive niche it only takes weeks to lose the top spots.

it is due to competition. while you are going into comfort zone after one mont of SEO and link building, your competitors are not slacking off. they are working hard to outsmart you. in this world of SEO, you snooze, you lose!

there should have a way to keep yourself on top. everyone would be restless if the ranking is only base with how many backlinks the site have. is there?

It's the Ride, Roll or Get Rolled Over Syndrome! If you don't keep moving you WILL get mashed down and trampled over. Competition is a mutha!

seo is on going due to trends.
some times, we can see keywords search trends in some countries, so we have to change our optimization as per latest search term in google or any search engine, also as per google strategy, updated sites have high proirity to rank well on serp, so here w need to work for any kind of updated from content, meta and link building.

That's why seo is ongoing process.
