Why is mysql_safe running?

Why is it that mysql is running twice? Once as normal daemon and once as safe. Is this normal or are we doing something wrong?

    [root@db1 ~]# ps ax | grep mysql
    14734 pts/1 S 0:00 /bin/sh /usr/bin/mysqld_safe --datadir=/var/lib/mysql --pid-file=/var/lib/mysql/db1.pid
    14764 pts/1 Sl 0:37 /usr/sbin/mysqld --basedir=/ --datadir=/var/lib/mysql --user=mysql --pid-file=/var/lib/mysql/db1.pid --skip-external-locking --socket=/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock

    Code (markup):

Nevermind, apparently mysqld_safe is meant to be running as well
