By typing your website full url on Google it's there, so it's not an indexing problem, but when using the keyword, you know right that "free chat rooms" is a common one, so it's not easy to get on first pages, your website is not well optimized for that keyword, you gotta put some efforts to get in there.

hugely competitive niche - is there some other phrase you could optimise for with better results?

Make the most of the html and put alternate text against those images and give links a title attribute.

    Thanks for that.
How is it not well optimized? The keyword is in the title tag, the h1 tag and also the <strong> tag.

Also on googles keyword tool it says that "free chat rooms" has low competition.

So you think title tag is eveything you need to rank well on seach engines?
You should try adding a blog section, writing some SEO content and building more backlinks, bookmarking etc..
And "free chat rooms" is not a low competition, i'm sure.

It’s a highly competitive niche. You need to do SEO to get ranking. It is a hard work. Optionally you could start will long tail less competitive keywords. So you will get initial traffic.

There can two possible reasons behind this.

1: First the Keyword is competitive and that's why your website is not the first page. This has to do with your website DA.
2: Type the complete website url and see if anything comes up. If you don't find still, then google is not indexing it.
