From my experience, I can say to continue to get quality backlinks specially via articles submissions, blogging and etc. That will help you to rank 1.

 

The keyphrase "dslr apprentice" has no monthly traffic data associated with it.

I would recommend performing seem keyword research before exhausting efforts on keywords which drive little to no traffic.

 

It probably depends on the backlinks those other sites have, and the age of the backlinks, a lot of factors Google and the other search engines don't want to reveal

I use https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal tool to find out suitable keyword for your URL.

You can just include your URL in website column and hit enter to get all suggested keywords with its average monthly search volume in Google.

Try to search in Google.com for your selected targeted keyword and check. For example when I hit "photography tips", there are 54 million competing page thus making it very competitive keyword to target for a new site.

My best suggestion is to find high monthly average traffic keyword in Google Adwords External keyword tool that have low competing page in Google and target that keyword in your link building campaign.

Low competition will give easy way to reach higher ranking faster and you will be free to choose another set of keywords and so on.
