Why is my direct traffic bounce rate so high?

    Hi,

Since the end of October something weird has happened.

My homepage is recieving 'Direct' visitors - About 300 a day. The bounce rate from the direct traffic is 97%. The homepage bounce rate from Google traffic is 18%

What is direct traffic? I thought it was when someone types in your URL or opens the page via their bookmarks.

Why would they leave instantly if they visited my site directly? Is it spam?

Yes Direct traffic is that traffic where visitors directly open the website. If bounce rate of your direct traffic is very high then one reason may be that what people are looking at your website is not relevant to them.

The above is correct. Check your traffic source, e.g if I search for slippers and end up with a site related to cars, I would close it! Check and monitor/modify your keywords constantly,

Maybe you are regularly checking your homepage daily and close it. :)

Direct is simply when some types in your site's URL into their address or when they don't visit your site from a live link. It's odd how you suddenly get so many direct visitors and get a high bounce rate.

Also it is possible that those visitors are bots and spiders of SE's. Or maybe any automatic thing that searches sites, take immediate check then leave.

Yup, you right but there's a possibility that you did not block your IP on Google analytics or Statcounter. IMO
