Can we talk about numbers here? I see your home page doesn't "weight" more than 345 KB.

I also don't see much media stuff on your site.

run it through http://websiteoptimization.com/services/analyze/ and see what you can change to external files.

I see a large amount of java and css near the top of code on each page that would be better if it was external, so it was loaded once then cached by the browser.

How much is too much? My forum transfers about 160 gigs a month. For some people that is a lot, to some people its nothing, to me its average.

Could you please provide a little more information besides "too much"? Could you possibly share the number of uniques, the amount of bandwidth used, number of pageviews per month? If you do not have those number, any you do have would really help.

U can run test http://websiteoptimization.com/services/analyze/ and follow the steps which can decrease ur page size.

For bandwidth more usage u must check in ur awstats which ips are eating more u must ban them. Enable hot link protection and last tip will diffinately help u.

    List of plugins Explainstuff uses:

    1) AddThis Social Bookmarking Widget
    2) Akismet
    3) All in One SEO Pack
    4) Contact Form 7
    5) Global Translator
    6) Google Analytics for WordPress
    7) Google XML Sitemaps
    8) Hello Dolly
    9) Link Juice Keeper
    10) Sociable
    11) Submit It Plugin
    12) Tabbed Widgets
    13) Twitter Tools
    14) Visitor Like/Dislike Post Rating
    15) WordPress.com Stats
    16) Wordpress Automatic Upgrade
    17) WP-Polls
    18) WP Greet Box
    19) WP Super Cache

I don't know about the plugins. But, I'm sure of one thing. The template isn't designed by me. and the css on the top of the index file came with it. My only worry is, if I make changes to it, I'll mess with the custom-options 'for and provided' by the theme.

Major issue, as to why we think the site is taking too much bandwidth is:
    __________Total Users in month____Average Users daily_____Bandwidth used______Total_____Avg BW/visit
    (Viewed + Bots,worms)

    Apr_______________629_____________________31_____________482MB + 372MB_____854MB______290KB/visit
    May______________1863____________________621____________1.84GB + 2.66GB____4.50GB______470KB/visit
    Jun(upto 21st)_____3170___________________1057____________3.62GB + 3.40GB____7.02GB______680KB/visit

I understand the increase in bandwidth/visit because I had added the plugins with time. But is that kind of band width usage normal. I also doubt it is because of the theme I'm using. Because until mid-May I was using another template and am thinking that current theme is also heavy.(But it is the most used theme by wordpress users!)

Ok one more thing about the bandwidth is: Do bots almost use as much as your visits?
See the table, the usage by bots is almost equivalent to that of the users every month.
Google took almost 1GB this month till now.

It is not the 7GB in 20 days that seems wrong. It is the 670KB/visit (which is increasing) that is worrysome. Also the bots using as much as visitors is too btw.

Any light on this would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

If you're adding new content everyday then you are going to get crawled more and more. You really need to choose a hosting service with unlimited bandwidth if you are serious about blogging.

Look at your stats to see who is visiting your site. I get a lot of traffic to my sites form China, Russia, etc. Lots of crawlers and bots out there. I have nothing I am selling to people in those countries so I block the IP Addresses. No bot crawls no unwanted spammers from foreign countries and therefore less bandwidth used. You would be surprised how much bandwidth can be used up by people who are not interested in your content and who will never help you achieve your goals.

No I don't have many visitors from China and Russia or other countries. Main source of users is USA, UK and India.
Only crawlers and bots, I see are from Google, Yahoo, Bing, Alexa etc. All others are consuming very minor bandwidth.

So, like euhlier said, is this Bandwidth usage by search engine bots more because I'm updating the site too often? I had actually hard coded a meta-tag <meta name="Revisit-after" content="1 Day"> so that bots visit only once everyday. (I know we can't schedule, but then isn't there a way to limit bot visits? Like say I'll spank ya if you come back again today? :p )

Are you sure this is not just normal traffic? As you get more pages indexed, more backlinks and so on - your traffic is going to go up.

Your averaging 680KB/visit - lets say that your home page is 68kb. That equals out to 10 page views per visit. Now lets say that your home page is 75kb. That equals out to an average of 9.06 page views per visit. Those are average numbers well within a reasonable limit.

As an example, my main forum averages out to around 12 pages per visit.

To be honest, I do not see anything wrong, or outstanding with your traffic and used bandwidth. Everything looks normal to me.

hmmm I think that explains it. But there is a difference in number of page views in awstats and google analytics though. The average number of pages/visit for explainstuff is 11.27 according to Awstats. But my analytics only shows about 2 page views every visit! So, do not know which number to base on.
