Ive been No.2 in google Serps for months for my main keyword and ive steadily been building links, a few days ago when i checked my SERPs I was number 1, stayed number 1 for about 3 days then dropped back to number 2, it doesnt look like my competitor has changed anything, i have hundreds more in links, could google of just been feeling generous for a couple of days, could this be a sign that im close to taking the number 1 spot. Do google maps listings have any bearing on SEO and serps, the only thing i changed while i was number 1 was the text on my google maps listing which is a completely different thing to my site, although it does have a link to my site????

    Hello,

It seems to me that although you have many more links then your competitor, his links are more valuable. So it sounds like you have hundreds of more links that are either spam, or just not valuable at all. Plus his links may rank better when it comes to anchor and description inclusions as well as allintitles and stuff like that.

I would say build links to relevant sites for now on.

    Regards,
    Nick

I dont think Google map has any effect for SERP. You cannot exactly say your competitors are same. You cannot determine their changes. Even some of your links may devalued or removed. You cant guarantee that.

im not too sure about that, many of my back links come from the same sites as his I have obtained heaps of backlinks from other relevant sites, perhaps his on page optimisation is better than mine?

That could defiantly be it. I would suggest optimizing you tags and your content. Use an inner link strategy as well. For a little added boost try using a 301 redirect if you haven't already.

    Hello,

A 301 redirect is a method that can be implemented that redirects one site to another. Or for your purposes, you can redirect "yoursite.com" to "www.yoursite.com".

In a search engines eyes links to "yoursite.com" and links to "www.yoursite.com" are totally separate things. But by using a 301 redirect it will make all your links point at "www.yoursite.com" and give you more links and more power.

So you can see this is very useful. For more infor and how to implement it I suggest visiting http://www.webconfs.com/how-to-redirect-a-webpage.php.

    Thanks,
    Nick
