well seo is all about bringing visitors for your site. Writing good content to captive the visitor and make him stay for a while on you website is another case... diggs are useful but dont rely on them. you have to comment and post in forums blogs .. etc. May be one has to establish self as an authority in that field or niche before he/she can generate a sale.
what is the purpose of google to find relevant results for users the users want good information and this translates to content hence google like good content you really need to try some things to see how it all goes you will only learn by doing things not by reading responses in a forum
Dickie is right, Google will soon be ranking by influence too if it hasn't already done so, relevant information and articles has never been more important.
the more content about a specific content you post the more google will realize that your site has a connection to this specific topic. thus, your rankings will increase. blogs are good because indexing your content is working much better than with static sites.
What matters to SEO is that you visitor finds what they came looking for. If you have an ecommerce site then your products are your "content". Good content is merely "matching" the search phrase a customer uses with the product/article/service they want to find. SEO is many things. Conversion is what ultimately matters.
And even if you have prepared all those 'must have for SEO' stuff, but you don't have anything to offer (or anything new/interesting, people won't come back.
