Domain name buying is addictive because it's easy to do.

It's a lot easier to run around buying domain after domain after domain then it is to buy 1 domain and develop it so you get instant gratification with little or no work. Most of the time you lose money on the domains but you feel like you're accomplishing something based on the fact that your list of domains gets bigger everyday.

And yes, I've fallen into the trap as well, I have tons of domains just sitting there doing nothing when I should be buying a smaller amount and developing them properly.

This is an editorial I wrote last month for my website.

Okay I admit that if I had spent as much time on something productive as I have searching domain names, I probably could have discovered a cure for some serious disease. Well that may be an exaggeration but i'm just trying to make a point.
Now I know I am not the only out there that does this. I'm sure thousands share the same affliction but the question is why? Why do we spend hours coming up with names and doing bulk searches at 2am when we should be sleeping soundly in our warm beds? I like to compare it to the Gold expeditions where thousands flocked to the Yukon in search of a windfall. These cold and tired miners would spend weeks even months sifting and panning the rivers for their Sex.com. Even though our chances of uncovering a valuable new unregistered domain is slim to none. We hope that our little nugget of rock will turn into a nugget of gold in the not so distant future. As I've said I have had some monetary success selling domains but when I think about the time I've put into it I'd say I'm about even. But I will continue to pan the rivers because the hunt is just as fun as the discovery.

The problem with some people is they start thinking that every domain they are registering is a multi million dollar company, so they keep adding more multimillion companies in just $10 =P how funny.

[PS I have also been owner of multi million firms several times]
