So if login to Copyscape today it says: "Google now requires that Copyscape passes your IP address through to the Google API. If you are uncomfortable with this, please consider switching to Yahoo! in the user settings." So why is this happening?
Probably Google notices your IP when you do any search - something to do with custom tailoring of search results for that IP. If the Copyscape didn't forward your IP, Google might consider it a bot and block access. It's just a speculation on my part, but I don't think Copyscape would do that if it didn't have to.
Oh, I think I get it. So if you switch to Yahoo! in your settings Copyscape will use Yahoo! to search instead of Google? I thought Copyscape was more sophisticated than that, didn't realize all they did was search Google - I can do that myself for free.
What if only part of the article you check is plagiarised? You can search for every sentence separately in Google or Yahoo, or you can let Copyscape check all article for plagiarized parts at once. It saves a lot of time. And search engines have the biggest databases of stuff to compare, so it makes sense to use them IMHO.
You mean to say... you have the capability to search full content of all the articles using google/Yahoo SE and provide the duplicate content list on a single click? If you can... you can surely launch your own version of copyscape and help the society... for free! Regards, RightMan
You're right of course, I never thought of that. But if I'm paying and have to login how can I be a bot?
How does sending them your IP address assist them in such an endeavor? I mean they do that anyway, have done for a long time, and it's very easy for them already.
Tricky thread title..I was hoping for an answer from the OP. Google has probably been doing this for a while now, recording IP addresses. I hope someone can bring light to this question. Try asking copyscape for a real answer?
This is probably for their own safety. Google normally blocks a IP when there are several search request in a very short time from a single IP. Forwarding your IP along with the search quarries will put the gun on your shoulder.
Copyscape was down for several days-maybe they were hacked somehow. I think it's odd too. I am very skeptical about that site, even though everyone swears by it-how in the world can it search the ENTIRE web in seconds for duplication? Whoever is behind the site must be a billionaire by now. Wish I'd thought of it first!
It records your personal IP, not the IP of your site so therefore, how would it know if your content is duplicated and penalize you.
Yeah, sorry, I should have put a question mark on the end. If it was anything sinister/sneeky/a bit dodgy I doubt CS or Google would tell us the truth. If it wasn't for the "If you are uncomfortable with this..", suggesting you might have reason to be, I don't think I would have given it a second thought.
yeah, it's sound weird. Google can check us with user session when we login to Google. But, asking copyscape ? who knows ?
