In this forum I can see lot of people prefer CentOS for server application. My question is: Why is beter chose CentOS then like RedHat or Debian? Rudolf
Its CentOS not CenterOS . Read this article: http://www.thejemreport.com/content/view/215/74/ It should give you a better understanding of the different distros. - Prilep
Linux distributions differ mostly with prepackaged software distribution and update mechanism set by default. CentOS and Red Hat are cousins... The main is how the system tuned but not what the flavour was used for install
CentOS Uses less server resources and its easier to manage even for a newbie so its prefered on that most control panels work on it specially lxadmin was made for centos and most of the vps companies therefore choose centos
It's stable, consumes less resources unlike ubuntu and other debian which consume a bit more resources.
It is stable and uses less reources which makes it more popular. It also has more problem fixes because more people use it so if you had something else you might find less help if you have a problem with it.
Just to add to what everything has said, CentOS stands for Community Enterprise Operating System which is built by the community using the source code of Redhat Operating System. As in CentOS 5.3 which is the current stable release available has been built using the source code of Redhat Enterprise Linux 5.3. Anyone using CentOS has the same stability as that of a Redhat system albeit community support. I hope this adds to everyone said and what you were looking for.
I'm not a fan of CentOS but I use a lot of advanced options that don't come in the CentOS package. First time I dealt with a CentOS box, I spent more time installing packages than in actually managing the box and installing the sites. We're a FreeBSD shop as a reference.
Thank you Guys for answers. But I'm not gone change down my Debian Linux servers. I think Debian beat any of Linux Distribution if we looking for the security. Maybe need more hardware resource but today is very cheap the hardware. Rudolf
Disagree about resourses - depends of kernel and services. The same with security - we can talk just about "out of box" performance and security which are poor for both discussed distributions if not tuned from default values.
