Pool halls? Really? Where? I'm on my way.
    This is an awesome thread!

But seriously, I'm down with Gandhi and curry, have never heard anything outside of Ravi Shankar, but I'd like to.

Yes I would agree with you but we should try to bring them to a better standarad of living and now days I would say there is some improvement in standard of living

Also I am evidence to this as I am on outskirts of the city and there are so many villages after my house which is about 9 kms from the city and when I travel by city bus where a no of villagers travel in it and I can see a no of cellphones ringing every second and also they As I see their standarad of living has improved greatly

    Aww dear :)

Companies growing rich -> Companies expanding -> More people getting Jobs -> Companies growing richer -> People getting promotions in Jobs -> People growing richer -> More people getting employed -> OVERALL GROWTH.

Overall Growth is what that is happening right now in India, our government has also implemented an EXCELLENT Employment Guarantee Scheme through which all people that are unemployed will be given employment according to their qualifications or if the government is unable to give them employment, the Government will give them enough money so that they can survive.

Bombay and Bangalore etc. are the cities where the prime industries and their headquarters are situated, however, the WHOLE India is interconnected, people are growing crops, selling them, earning money... selling their lands, reinvesting the money, making more out of it... everyone who is worthy of surviving is PROGRESSING.

I had been to a village recently and I saw an electronics fete where many different companies were advertising their products and Indian Villagers were buying those products on finance schemes. :) The standard of living is growing at a rapid pace, people now have Television, Satellite Dish connections, Refridgerators, DVD Players and Coolers even in their village homes. Financing is making life easy and a whole lot better for everyone today. India is on the right track!

China is a communist country. Period.

I am studying at a place called Tiruneveli( a tier 3 city) which is 160 kms away from my home When I come back at the weekends to my house I can see the real difference there are many industries coming up on te national highway-7 and due to this no of people are getting jobs and also there was industrial zone which had smaller no of industries during my first yeatr but as I am now in fourth year I can see the real difference and there were many industries from biscuit making to all kinds of industries

And also I like to tell this

    These are real indicators

our airport Madurai -Tier II city) had only one flight from Chennai(metropolitan or Tier I) in 2003 but it is now frequented by more than 8 flights from two destinations

and also in 2003 I was the only one inour hostel who had cellphone but now each and every one has got it and also

every time I travel to my Madurai from tirunelveli in weekends in a state express trasportation corporation bus I can assure that more than 50% of people travelling there had cell phones

and I think these are signs of India moving fast ande villages and other two tier cities are alsocatching up very fast with big cities

Are you aware that hundreds of farmers have committed suicide in Andhra Pradesh and Maharastra in the last 2 years. They took this extreme step because they could not earn enough to repay their loans...even now farmer suicides are continuing.

You talk of India being interconnected...I believe there is a vast disconnect between urban and rural India. It is urban India that is shining...

You must remember that a major portion of the population lives in villages...where basic amenities like healthcare, electricity, clean water, telecommunications etc are yet to be provided for...

[IMG]Accredited by whom? Uncle Sam?:D The same uncle sam that imposed sanctions on India following our first nuclear test. To state the facts, India is not a signatory to the NPT.

Several sources I have checked put it at 59% but that's beyond the point. Even if 66% are literate, it still is not an excuse for having the world's largest illiterate population. 66% is appreciable? In itself perhaps. But 34% illiteracy is deplorable, that still is 372,419,678 illiterate people.

    Perhaps, however

that^^ is an overly optimistic perspective. I don't expect poverty to be significantly curtailed anytime in the next couple of decades because as Indians start to get on the world stage, poverty will not be measured by Indian standards. The official poverty line in the US is $9,800/year for an individual, while in India Rs.3600 (US $80)/year for an individual is the poverty line.

I think some body (politicians can make it optimistic if they behave well and plan well) and also we should not rely more on these estimates as these may not be that exact

No nation is perfect. Its the citizen who should strive to make it perfect.

There is still disparity in India. Growth and powerty is synymous. Brilliance and quotas go hand in hand.

But look at the brighter side of things. People are slowly putting india and indians on their watch list. True the successes are few and far between. But they are worth appreciating. We have come a long way in 50 years.
We cannot predict the future but India is definately making rapid stides.

So lets hope for the best and believe that India and Indians have lot to offer to the world.

Dude getting cell phones doesn’t mean the country is developing , the basic necessities like good roads, water and electricity is still lacking in most of the small towns and these is what they need. And this is where the government fails

I stay in Bangalore and the traffic jams here are so horrible that most of the companies are moving out of here to Pune or Hyderabad. The state of the roads are pathetic. There is still power cuts in this so called silicon valley. This is a metro I am talking about, cannot imagine the smaller cities and villages .and almost 60% of the population stays in the rural areas. Think about that .

India is still a country of haves and have- nots and until the gap is lessened , only the metro cities will continue to grow and the smaller towns will suffer.

Not to thread crap, I have no problems with Indians...

But I keep hearing this when looking for programmers lately, "If you have an Indian do your programming, it will be sold on 100 other websites", and other things along those lines. Someone mentioned "web page maker vs webmaster" as well.

So the stereotype being built seems to be of hard workers creating mass quantity of low quality product, or they can't be trusted with unique projects.

I haven't had enough experience with Indians to say either way, so I am just asking for opinions.

    ---

That said, one of my favorite foods is Vindaloo, love that spice! :)

I think know bangalore is bit a worse but My point here is that smaller cities like Madurai are growing up and they are expanding at a fast pace and also I forget to tell one thing about the roads and the four way national highway project work has been in progress and the work is going on at a feverish pace and every weekends as I come to Madurai I could see that and workers are working dayand night to complete the work

and also We in Tamil Nadu have some good roads but in Karnataka they have
not properly planned so only your are suffering

India is the best country in the world

And Australia is the best in racism

    and do you remember

What your Australian cricket team does ? It pushes a minister of Government of India(has no manners)

and also call our Monty(Bloody Indian)

I think thats why Australia is best in Racism

And also Australians are thinking that they are going to win the world cup but thats not going to be
