I only use niche directories. Most people will just use google for everyday searches.

I like directories because there is no other option of permanent link building for free. They take time but if you can approve them then you are getting a permanent link.

I hate directories too. It is one of the ways to get some free links, but it is mostly waste of time. And it is true that they need a lots of time to approve links. And finally, after short period they remove our links (it is rare permanent links).

One way to get free links, exactly, free links and waste of time dont go together i feel, yes they need time if they are checking each submission, otherwise you will share your listing in a category with unrelated sites.

Ive not seen any proof of links being removed shortly afterwards, free permanent web directory links are not rare.

I have seen web directories disappear altogether or turn into a blog, social bookmarking site or something else but i think you will find that those types of directory owners are the same that post a few months beforehand asking how they can make monies with a web directory, what pr do they need to begin making money, asking how easy it is, is it worth their time etc

You are obviously bitching and crying about free directories.
Just stop... instead, go and crawl into a corner and don't come out until you've grown up enough to realize you cannot cry about freebies.

You are 'charging your clients' for something you get for 'free'

    duh, duh and duh again.

    I feel for your 'clientel'

well i am agree that some directory owner will not approved links or may be their approval times so longs.
and directory submission approval ratio is around 50 to 60% but i am still happy to submit my sites in directory because of that i can increasing my PR very easily.
