Once a domain name expires last onwer has the right to renew domain for a month. That would mean owner could reregister up to 4-13-2006, then it goes to another status that usually lasts about a week. Shawn has some good posts on this with more accurate time lines.

Once domain name is released it goes on auction block. If it is a jewel it may be snapped up before you have a chance to get even if you have backordered.

    Good luck.

Thanks Shannon for that info. I am completely hopeless now :( I have been closely following a domain name but I am sure the auction will be the worst part of the whole process

Good luck to the two of you getting your domain. If either of you find Shawn's posts would you please reference the thread here.

I am helpless as a research persson. My categorization scheme and the schemes of yellow page deisigners, Dewey decimal system, etc go over my head.

Has been that some registrars, if it is a good domain name with good pr, either keep it themselves (godaddy is famous for this) or as mentioned, put it on auction at some astronomical price as starting bid.
And they do not lower that price if no bids.
