Instead of one that you can concentrate your promotional/internal efforts on?

it is like in animal world, some inferior animals make 1000+ babies..and of course can't take care of each, while superior make just 1 and take very good care of it :)

i guess most people just get carried away creating directories - because it's so easy to create one - just get a domain name and install a script - 5 minutes?

Getting a domain and making a directory is very simple but very difficult to handle it and make it fruitful.

erm... why would getting a domain take a few days? just go to namecheap and register a domains - 5 minutes tops.

once you install the directory script, if you can get your hands on a copy of a category dump for the script, it takes another 5 minutes tops to create the directories.

    :)

You are right, because that is hard to get time, spend money, and more to build link popularity and marketing for one domain.

But we have used other idea that under one domain, we build multilanguage directory so with one domain we can target multilanguage and many countries.
    such as

    http://www.a1directorysearch.com/ (English)
and ten more languages coming before end of this month under same domain.

I have 3 directories. 2 of them are very good ( the 3rd one is just new). They brought me and currently bring decent income. And people rate them good. I don't see why wouldn't we owe more directories.

I think sometimes people get them started for future value. They may plan on selling them for instance. Also, often many of the people that buy links buy them on more than one directory, so having more than one directories allows you to get more money from buyers.

Yea. I notice alot of brand new directories created specifically for the Buy and Sell forum here on DP. If you don't want to go to the trouble of setting up a directory yourself, these may be good deals for you.

Exactly, David. I get many people purchasing submissions to several of my sites. And myself, when I buy links, if I notice the owner of the directory I am submitting has more sites, often I will purchase links on those sites as well.

I have multiple general directories because I think it's easy to manage them after you have it all setup. Granted, one of mine does require a lot more work than the other but they are worth it to me in the end. So why have one when you can have two :)

I have 4 directories. Each one attracts a different audience that, i think, would get lost if i had only one.
The aim is to make them niche. The task is indeed a hard one. 4 babies to feed and keep healthy for a long life.
I also believe that each one will attract audience to the others. So...its the choice i made.

As for how long it takes to make a directory?
5 minutes? I guess if you dont care much about making it an original one it will take you 5 minutes to make one that looks just like a million others online.

It took me a whole month, first to find the right script, then to make it look how i want it to look, and my work isnt anywhere near complete.

If you have one diectory and make it successful why not create another and guide it down the same path. If you can make one work them you can make the next directory do the same.

Thing is what I dont understand is just say you have 3 multiple directories, surely your aim for all is to build them up with as many quality sites as you can find. Well that would mean each submission you recieve for 1 you "should" add to the other 2 directories but if you do that then you just end up having 3 directories exactly the same and that doesnt help your viewers...thats why I dont think I could ever own more than 1 general directory.

Unless you have different submission criteria for each: one mostly paid submissions, another listing only high quality sites, another very easy to get into. There's also the issue of the extra information you provide with each listing: ranking/coolness, thumbshots, extra site information, etc. So in theory each directory could do it differently.

A good submitter, or submission service, will write out at least 5 or 6 different descriptions for each site. So you won't always get duplicate pages, even if the sites included are the same.

I have 4 general directories. Each targets a slightly different phrase, like "seo friendly" or "lifetime links" for example. Its just the concept of one keyword per page being kicked up a notch.

If you have 1 directory and earn 1$ today - tomorrow create 10 directories...

Maybe spend a few days trying hard to come up with a good domain name, or backordering a good expiring one.. :D
