Why have a "Like" button for your web page?
I understand it's good to have someone "Like" your Facebook Page,
but if you have a "Like" button on your web site, won't that take the
web visitors away from your web page?

I guess it might take away one visitor, but since it's shown in the user's news feed, it'd give you a ton more.

EDIT: I'm not thinking. Clicking "Like" doesn't take the visitor away from your page.

I don't think the "like" button will take your visitors away. Only visitors interested in you will click the ''like" button and then they can know your updates. Visitors come and go, you cannot reach them until they come to you. The Facebook "like" button helps you build a bond with your visitors just as newsletter subscription and service registration do. Thanks.

The like button can help you to have viral traffic on your site ! Especially if your website is interesting for young people.

When someone 'likes' your website the news will appear on their friends' newsfeed. Therefore using the 'like' button means you can greatly increase your brand's visibility to people who may not know of your brand. It also allows you to push out relevant messages to those who have 'liked' it.

    Thanks for the replies.

So, having a "Like" button on my web site's web page (not talking about facebook fan page) and some web site visitor, Mr. X, selects that they like my web site's web page, by selecting the "Like" button, it will put info (that they liked it) on Mr X's FB friends' newsfeed. Correct? What if my web site visitor selects the "Like" button on my web site web page, but doesn't have a Facebook account?

They'll get an error telling them to sign up for Facebook. Log out of Facebook and find a site with the button to check for yourself.

With the like button on your website only those visitor went away who don't have interest in your web page. So it is beneficial that they are going on your facebook page it means that visitor is still in your reach.
