Why has my direct traffic gone down?

So before the redesign of a client site, they were seeing approximately 1900 (85% unique) visitors via direct traffic. After the redesign, we've seen an unbelievable spike in traffic, but the direct traffic has gone down tremendously from the 1900 to about 350 visits (80% unique). While we're seeing great results, it just doesn't make sense to me that it has decreased. Any thoughts?

I did find that there was a redirect on the server to a subdirectory; so when a visitor directly visited the site via typing in the url via the browser bar, they were redirected to the subdirectory. Still, there are a decent amount of uniques here... Anyone? I'm stumped!

why don't you stop the redirection to get rid over the situation. The uniques come because the site already ranks and they do come to the home page but you are probably loosing hits to inner pages which might not be loading because of the redirection thing.

It was an issue with redirects on the server side that were happening before our involvement with the site... Something which we had no control over. Thanks for all the help... or lack there of Adriaan1985.
