I'm using Quad-core w/3 gig of ram. I noticed that the hard drive always have high activity when the system is in idle. Its very annoying and loud, is there any ways to make it to stop? IE7 also crashes more on Vista than XP. Anybody have the same problem?
not yet using vista on my system... but about that idle state stuff..I think their is some hidden process behind there... virus, spyware ..??
than why would the hard drive have high activity even when it is idle?? by the way you using some software to check the hdd activity or guess work (hearing sound )
when I bought my system some 4 years back then those days I regularly used to ask my vendor about the sound which CPU produces.. he said it has three fans inside so the sound is legitimate. Yours is a high end system..I guess you need to get versed with that sound
My wifes computer system used to be like that. I went in there and uninstalled the Anti-Virus, all open IM clients, veoh services, any services started during start up, and then lastly any open program that she wasn't using at the time. The hard drive ticking stopped. I suggest you do the same thing. Also, take the time to look up the services running in the back ground and stop the ones that your not using. If it wasn't for the 3gb of ram your using I would say you need more ram. Also, check to see how much pagefile your system is using. Could be set to use a big number, which is fine, but in your case it would be good to adjust it. Then you have to think about the noise of fan's and of the system in general. You could look into getting quieter fans and/or investing into a water cooled system instead. Your best bet is to look at the programs and services running. Shutting all of them down could be a quick fix. I found that Veoh is really bad about thrashing a hard drive when the system is both in use and idle. .
Right, there may be a loose screw or something. As far as the IE7 thing goes. Do you have SP1, and all updates?
The fan is quiet, its just the hard drive is runing very hard and loud. The system came with Norton Anti-Virus installed. Maybe its doing something when the system is in idle. I'm about to install the Vista SP1 right now, hope it'll solve the problem.
