or better yet, what modifications, changes or updates that you have done with your website?

Basically, there are a lot of factors for a website to be penalised by Google however it would mainly depend on the things that you have DONE with your website.

It's hard to see why your site was penalized without seeing it. Doing some blackhat techniuqes is one of the reasons why website gets banned.

I can’t see behind the doors :) without the address of your site it is impossible to tell any reason for that. If you didn't do anything wrong, it’s probably that this domain was used by doorways or someone like that. As a result Google filtered the domain. In this case, it is necessary to make a request for revising.

Are you writing copied content on your website or getting backlinks from bad sites?

Then only you will be penalized.

When you say penalized, what exactly had happen to your site? Deindexed? Move ranking position pages deeper? Nowhere to be found within top1000 competition but still index?

As you can see, you are asking a question while leaving completely clueless of what exactly had happen to your site. Penalize thing needs to be elaborated as it can mean more than one thing.

If your meaning of penalize is decreasing your site rank in search engine then check your site's bounce rate, pop up ads in your site and duplicate contents in your site. These are some of reasons of down ranking.

1st go to your analysis and find out in which hour google penalize your site, then find out the activities you had done before.

I think it's best to mention what particular penalty did google impose on you? There are a lot of possible reasons and it may be easier to pinpoint which violation you committed based on the magnitude of the penalty.

Duplicate content is also an one of the reason for penalize. Check your content via copyscape.com. Avoid copying other website's content.

Google usually penalize websites when the number of backlinks of that website to be increased fast. If you made a lot of backlinks for your website and specially from low quality pages, its possible that Google penalize your website. And i think it happened for your website. The other reason can having duplicate content on your website. If the content of most pages of your website are duplicated and copied from other websites, Google think your website is not valuable and maybe de-index the pages of your website or rank your pages low.
To fix your website you should stop making backlinks for it or make some backlinks from high quality websites for it SLOWLY.
Also write unique content for your website, then you should wait that your website returns to its previous position on Google.

    1. I don't think that Google will penalise you for getting many backlinks for a short period of time although if it is coming from utterly low quality spam websites then Google might devalue the links but would not penalise you in any way. This has been discussed for years and has been directly related to the question, "What if my competitors started building backlinks for me on low quality spam websites? Would I get penalised because of it even though I never wanted those links?". This has been debunked and gaining backlinks won't hurt you (well most of the time). Imagine if I had this super cool information blog and I have lots of readers daily, I put one post and everybody starts to link to it in a short span of time. Would I be penalised just because people wanted my post and decided to give me backlinks for it?

    2. I also don't think that Google will penalise you for copied content. There is a difference in between devalued content and highly regarded content. Google, the ever genius search engine, can identify which website owns the authority over a certain content (most of the time) and they can also identify which ones are merely duplicates. Imagine if CNN posted a certain news and other local news websites started to source from that article, would they get penalised? No, although the webpage with the said copied content will only get less value than the original one. You're not penalised but only given less value and would find your copied article harder to rank.
