If you uploaded it to your host without, for instance, adding a "noindex" Robots meta tag, Google will index it. Not a problem, in my opinion.

isnt that the main seo purpose of a sitemap? to have google index it along with following the links within? if you upload your sitemap to your webmaster tool account or link to your sitemap from any of your pages, google WILL eventually index your sitemap which is a GOOD thing

You should consider yourself a lucky. Otherwise you can exclude them from being indexed using .htaccess file. It's up to you since you won't hurt by having sitemap indexed, isn't it?

Why? Why?? lol @ thread. XML sitemaps are Google's bestfriend when it comes to faster indexing especially to deep pages that can be hard to get indexed. If you don't want your XML sitemap get indexed then block it using robots or DON'T use one in the first place as it has NO use whatsoever to you.

...Isn't google supposed to index your sitemap? I mean...that seems to be what everyone tries to get Google to do so that it can therefore also begin indexing all the links on it. It's a good thing!
