I have been using a website publishing service for all my websites. They do a pretty good job and one of the features in their package is the DMOZ listing ... Why is it such a big deal? They got a social bookmarking service also part of the package which I get a lot more traffic from. Is it just to get into google page ranking? I don't think I seen any traffic to my websites form DMOZ.
Basically yes. DMOZ is still in my eyes (and I'll probably get flamed for this) the strictest free directory out there. As such, many fly by night sites that exist on a lot of free directories aren't there, and a lot of the sites within the directory are excellent quality. Google and other search engines do consider ranking in quality resources (such as DMOZ) a positive, and it will have a positive effect on your site. Don't believe me? One of the sites I promote was on page 3 for a short tail keyword, when it got listed in DMOZ, it jumped to page 1.
DMOZ gets respect from Google and other search sites. Many web directories just pick data form DMOZ. So if your site is listed in DMOZ your site automatically gets listed in various other directories
Even if's a hard road to take, it's recommended to have your site listed in DMOZ. It's considered first Google's crawling starting point.
DMOZ listings are just as good as any other link. Getting a link from them is better then not getting one from them *shrug* They likely list the submission as a sellng point due to the fact there are many that still believe that DMOZ is a link of all links....which is no longer is. It IS worth submitting too though, at least in most cases. At least as worthy as any other free directory.
The thread is about the advantages of listing in DMOZ in terms of traffic etc. For those wondering about listing, search and you will find. There are a lot of such threads around. Let this be a discussion on what the OP wants and do not hijack it with the same old questions on why you are not listed.
bookatechie If you frame your question only on traffic and PageRank you are miles away from DMOZ' purpose - those webmaster benefits are irrelevant to the organization. Truthfully you are unlikely to get much traffic from dmoz.org, and, nothing meaningful will likely occur to your PageRank status as Google has repeatedly denied any special weight for DMOZ listings. There is a meaningful difference between the ODP and other directories, free or paid: you don't select the ODP as worthy of your site, the ODP selects your site as worthy of its listing. This distinction escapes many people's notice.
It's not - but it was very important in the late 90's. The old information is just taking a looong time to die. No. If you get a listing it is most likely to be on a pr 3 or less page and you SPLIT that pr with ALL the other listings. It doesn't add up to anything that could be considered important.
I have to agree with you on this informative directory. This directory wants site that has great content an a valid business. DMOZ does a great job.
