This is my first post, so hello everybody I've just started building mainstream sites and submitting to directories and have noticed none have an adult section. Is it for SEO reasons? If a directory has 90% mainstream sites and a 10% adult section, would that adversely affect overall SE rankings for the directory?
Thanks for the reply. I'm asking as I am going to start a couple of directories and want to have an adult section, though I won't if it harms the SE rankings of a predominantly mainstream directory.
I suppose many directory owners are also using adsense and they don't want to link to adult sites just in case.
I had an adult section on my first regional directory. But if you want to use Adsense, the adult section is a nono, as dkessaris states. So I made a new regional adult only directory with other kinds of ads. The adult generates so much easy traffic though
I can just see my wife’s reaction if she would walk in when I am “reviewing†the sites for approval.
Of course, I forgot about Adsense and adult content. Do you get traffic to your adult directory mainly from reciprocal links?
Well, the big reason I do not have adult categories in my directories is very simple, and I am sure many directory owners have this also. My host company (and probably most owners host companies) has in their TOS small print about hosting adult, porn, naked women, etc is not allowed. I was (still may if I can find a good host company with a decent price) going to start an adult only directory...but host company said that they would be the judge of whether it would be acceptable or not. I could start it, build it up, and then poof! Host company pulls the site or really get nasty and shut down my hosting account.
well i have an littele secition about adult sites in my dir, but i don't allow the really dirty one, just the moderate ones And I don't think that google will say anything if i have a link to such a site on my pages...(at least i hope so )
I have had directories in the past with adult content. Due to the nature of the business they are a lot more trouble then they are worth dealing with. You get spammed to death by them and most editors don’t want to review them. They are about as popular with editors as cleaning a toilet.
There are some adult directories and directories with adult content to give you some idea of how some people are doing it over here http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=168620
Adsense is one reason. There are other advertisers and payment providers, each with their own policies on what they will allow. Sometimes its easier just to avoid certain categories altogether, and that way a directory has the largest possible choice of ways to make money and places to host.

NO... you cant have adsence as you would be breaking there agreement when you singed up for adsence. As for is it bad ? I have 2 adult directories and both are being indexed by google with No problems. I also have a section or a link in all my directories for a few adult sites providing they arent to Extreme or vulger. I dont see any harm unless the linking is irrelevent to both sites page topics. Both of my directories are new but are already under the 500,000 alexa within 3-4 weeks of launching. thx malcolm
I belive most don't use it because of adsense, but when I added adult section to my directory, it gets a of users because of that. In my derictory adult section is the most popular.
