Is there any interesting history behind this? I've done a quick search on Google and Yahoo but have not yet found an answer.

In 1994 the very first Netscape browser was known by the code name Mozilla during development. The term came from a combination of 'mosaic' and 'killer' because Netscape wanted to replace the original and most popular web browser at the time NCSA Mosaic.

During development and into production 'mozilla' was used as the user agent in http requests for Netscape. When other browsers came along including IE they used the same name for their user agent so that their users ended up on the same page as Netscape users i.e. were 'compatible'.

    The rest is history :)
