Anyone got any idea on why the amount of pages indexed changes so much??? I have had as many as 18,000 pages indexed...and then a month later as little as 3,500.

    Any ideas on this??

how you are checking the indexed pages? if u are by site command then check if other pages are suplimentry by some some reasons of duplicate title, description and content.

IT could be due to duplicate title.

Yes this always happens to me too. I find one website like a forum could have 20,000 pages indexed then a few weeks later on several hundred and vice versa.

i think it has mainly to do with the fact that the frequency of crawlers keeps fluctuating depending on how often you update your content and how much do you deep link every one of your 20,000 or so pages..
once its indexed, it needs to survive... its more like your web pages latency for google.

like for example i might be having [hypothetically] a web forum with thousands of backlinks to only my homepage, and having 10,000+ threads... consequently the PR[off the topic] might leak to my sub pages, but if none of my threads actually have rich content or incoming links or needed activity, they may get indexed at first and then when google revisits it.. its off the list..

thats just my opinion... anyone your views on it?

They monitor your links very effectively, and it will dip down for a couple of weeks usually as it gains and searches for more links to your site. It should go back up very shortly soon again.
