Why is it that when you start on a new forum you are made to feel orquad by the fact you have little posts compared to some of the hardcore members? Some members are fine and friendly with 'n00bs' (people with low post counts) and others like to flame them for that fact (since they have higher post counts it somehow gives them authority, in their petty place in the hierarchy, to boss around the n00bs). Of course admins favor the big posters because they generate large free content so they aint gonna go all out hell and ban them but just giv em a wrap on the wrist. Is there a way around post count being so psychologically intimidating? If there was it would most defiantly give the user an element of security when starting out on a new forum and be ultimately more welcoming. My ideas: - Reverse the groups order for post count: Let new users be called 'uber l33t pr0 h4x0rs' and top posters to be called 'n00bs'. User signs up*: "oh wow look it says im an 'uber l33t pr0 h4x0r'! I feel so special.." This will kill the intimidating 'you are a silly person and dont deserve to be here' rank and overall relax the forum for new users. - Who could possibly flame a user with an 'uber l33t' title? Then again some may find it intimidating going down the hierarchy of rank names than up it. - Make post count go down instead of up. - Similar to the theory above make post rank start at 10,000 and count down. When it's finished it repeats itself. If any of you have any other ideas to overcome this condition please post it I'd love to hear! Cheers, Andy
Yeah true at the end of the day a new user can have just as much, if not more, commitment than a regular user. Age could work, but then again I think that that system would easily become abused.
Post count means nothing. I'e always hated people who respect other's because of their post count. I could reply to every thread in the Introduction forum with 'Welcome' and every thread in the Freebies forum saying 'Thanks!'. Within a year I'd have over 10k posts, but it wouldn't make me a reputable member would it? I think vBulletin should include a system which takes into account a user's Post Count, Registration Date and Reputation Points and use an equation to work out an overall score.
i do not discriminate between n00bs and old members, i treat everyone with equal contempt if thats what they deserve how about you booking an appointment with minstrel and have a chat about your paranoia?
Its only normal.. happens on every forum. If you were to reverse counts it would still be the same, people with lower counts would still overrule newer members. Probably just rules of nature.. like being the new kid in school.
