One of the most probable reasons for drop down could be that content is not updated.Google page ranking algorithm drops the page having stale content. Yes I agree, that's the usual reason why PR drops, if you lose the backlinks that generated that PR then you will lose it eventually.
i agree with you guyz. if you lose the backlinks then you pagerank will be down for sure. and if my guess is correct your close competitors gaining more backlinks than yours (this is also the reason why the pagerank is down). Google algorithms are very powerful and upgrading its methods all the time to maintain the quality of search results.

Maybe you could have had some content that may not have been relevant for your keywords, unwanted links like adult, casino,etc
