Why does Google drop my results when I use sitemap?

I made a site map for a website I wanted to get ranked better for different pages and keywords. When I did this I was on page 2 for my main keyword, I made a site map submitted it and in 2 days I was on page 20, I left this go for a couple weeks and then it just was not in any nsearch results at all, so I removed the site map, 4 days later my site was back on page 2. Google has me so lost that they themselves must be lost. Why does this happen? Any information would be great. Thanks all. :)

Sure you weren't just hitting different datacenters in your search queries? You can control this partially through the query string, but not fully.

Thanks for the reply, I am not sure what you mean by the query string? Can you explain maybe? :)

A query string can refer to two things. One is what is in the address bar on the browser, the other is what is typed into the search box when searching using google.

    For example...

if your do a search query like

    site:attheboard.com

you might get results showing 60,000 pages

but if you structure it a little differently

    site:attheboard -oooooo

you might get results showing 65,000 pages.

by changing what is in the google search box, the results sometimes can vary. If might be caused by it hitting different servers or data centers based on how the full search query is written. I have even see different results based on the web browser being used. firefox appends some tracking data into queries such as

    rls=org.mozilla:en-US:eek:fficial&client=firefox-a

I have also noticed that different browsers will give different results, not only that but running FireFox on 2 different computers was giving me different results which I thought was really crazy. Well I guess I may need to stay away from the Google site map because I get more visits and more sales and can find myself in a basic search when I don't use the site map. I wish I could have the site map and the front page for a couple of my keywords. The weird thing is that I don't have any competition in my category besides for maybe 2 other sites, the search brings those sites up then the rest of the results are trash, they shouldn't even be there.

    OK, a quick example: http://www.google.dk/search?hl=da&q=sitemap+generator

Notice the query is sent to google.dk domain and contain hl=da ... In addition, Google is geotargeting me because I am from Denmark. These 3 factors determines Google will favour Danish websites in their search results.

It also means that since Google believes my domain is Danish that I have a harder time ranking internationally :( which makes me kinda sad quite often :)

Anyways, by changing domain / query string / your IP location, you will get different search results... And even if these are the same, Google may still switch between different data centers for load balancing and quickest response times. And those data centers may not all be 100% the same.

Well that makes total sense to me. Thanks. As I have been posting in here I have been reading about a recent change that has set well ranked sites to the background. I just don't know what causes this. I was told by one person to get some high pR backlinks and that would help, I hear so many things that I don't know what is correct and what is not.

I dunno, I was checking my webmaster tool, and had tons more duplicate meta tags, title tags, 404 errors, and bunch of other errors once google bot is able to crawl my site better with the new site map. I run a free classifieds site kazuum.com, just starting out, so we get tons of spams and duplicate postings, which I have to remove them. There are also tons of outbound links which lowers my page rank now google is able to find them. I just realized this, so I am blocking those directories on robot.txt, but the damage has been done and my organic searches has dropped by 1/3. At least that's my reasoning as to why my search traffic and ranking suddenly dropped.

I used the google sitemap and was dropped as well. I then took out the sitemap, just added the old style sitemap page on the website and I was back! I think submitting it to Google just lets them find problems with your site. If your site is perfect I'm sure it works well but I'm staying away from it.

Is anyone else having issues with Google sitemaps? Any other recommendations as to a good alternative if so?
