why does google ban some directories?

I am an artisit and was listed in a dirctory last yr. paid alot of money then theri ranking dropped. They tell me their listings were not to google standards and fixed their site but do not rank like they use to (which was first pg).. I have lost $800. At the time this co was #1 listed. About the time they dropped, a new co came along serving the same industry. Different owners. They require you to pay to be listed. They also list how many hits each artisit has (something the former directory I was with did, but then had to change cause they said it was not google standards). This sticks cause of them have there been longer and the typical consumer may think they are better. They do list join date but add in the number of hits from the date you first joined and not renewed.

I'm deciding if it is a smart move to pay for advertising there. I don't know if this new co will lose their place and if they are doing all that is correct. How can I know that? Also what I can do to get the co I put money in back to their rankings?
