to your computer ? I mean there are alot of them in the top 10-20 for certain keywords [ porn stuff mostly] why not give them a penalty like they do for everything else ? If G believes the site is harmful to your PC why leave it in the top 10 ?

How would they detect that a site is potentially harmful, vs. sites that have lots of scripts that the user desires? For example, most would say that MySpace sites have a potential to be harmful, but it hardly seems like a good idea for Google to remove all MySpace pages.

She means when you go to click on a site in the results google displays a message telling you it may be harmful and asks if you want to continue. Because google detects malware on that website. Check here
So the question is why even though google knows the site has malware does it still rank the website in results.

...I for one am glad Google hasn't taken on a police roll. If a site has the content/link power, then Google still ranks it.

Google's job has always been to primarily document/index and categorise.
Not preach, what if the owners of Google were of a certain religion or creed that they wanted to push?

They are not responsible for what is out there, it is your job to work out what is acceptable and what isn't. In relation to spyware and the like Google try and filter it out of the results but it is a fluid problem that evolves. I presume you still get spam getting through to your inbox yes? That's not your inbox's fault, just something we need to be aware of and in the case of harmful sites we need to be alert.

I imagine that Google isn't totally confident in their ability to evaluate which sites are really the potentially harmful. Most sites place tracking cookie, and that could be considered spyware by some scanners.

You basically have to rat out the sites yourself before Google will take action. Sure, the more bad attention a site gets, the greater the likelihood that Google will step in.

Each one of us is responsible for monitoring the internet, not just Google.
