What does the baby that dies at birth do to deserve it?

Yes of course they could. Are you forgetting that we are dealing with an (alleged) omnimax deity here? Such an omnimax deity could easily instil within us, the knowledge of happiness, good and love without having to experience suffering evil or hate. A simple task for something that allegedly created the universe and everything in it by just 'speaking' it into existence don't you think?

Evolution is not a 'random' process.

God does not allow suffering as God does not exist

It is simply Mankind's way of making excuses for not helping their fellow man

How so sure you are, that God allow suffering?
Suffering comes from own decision on one person, If you think wisely before you do or act something then definitely you were in the right direction.
It's like blaming someone with your wrong decision and action.

These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. John 16:33 KJV

And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; 4And patience, experience; and experience, hope:And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. Romans 5:3-5 KJV

There are several reasons behind this:
1- In the holy book, the God has said that He knows what we don't. So sometimes, we think something is bad, we lose our child, but the God knows the future of that child and we do not know and we pass judgment.

2- Our soul needs to suffer some pain in order to be able to understand the hidden facts about life and heaven. Unfortunately we are living a bad period of time, we are involved in technology and modernism, they all keep us away from the reason we are created by God. If you want to make a sword sharp and strong you should put it in fire and pressure, if you don't do it you will not have a sharp sword. Sometimes if you suffer from some pains your spirit will be open to new horizons.

3- Humans can think and decide to do something or do another thing or not to do anything. Sometimes we just suffer from the consequences of the things we do ourselves. If you put yourself in the deep ocean, you will die, This is a cause and effect , you cannot say oh God, you are kind please help me. God would probably say I gave you the wisdom, why didn't you use it?

4- Sometimes some earthquake happens and kills thousands of people, why? In our holy book which Quran, the god has said : "God does not give you any harm, but anything that happens to you is because of the things you do by your hand". Interpreters say that some people commit lots of sins and they do not obey God and The god will go angry and some incidents happens. (This may not be logic, because we believe the God is the most Kind, but we also have some other adjectives for God)

5- We believe God is in just. Without Justice God is not good for praying. So how can he be in just and let humans suffer from different things? Here we believe this world is the world of unjust and it is impossible to bring fair to all humans in this world and that is why the God has made another world which starts after our death, if you have suffered from something which was out of your control in this world, The God is kind enough to compensate it in another world which never ends

If you believe God as a supreme power and you just release yourself to his fate, at least you can tolerate the suffers better.

The question assumes a God that is arbitrary and makes decisions by deciding to do things. This comes about because most people project their own personal concept of authority upon their concept of they think God should be.

There exists Good, and there exists Evil to oppose Good. You are in the middle, and you are free to choose which to move towards.

In any civilized society there must be rules. In the USA there is the Constitution, federal, state and local laws. These laws are necessary in order for people to co-exist peacefully. If you break a law, you are punished.

The laws of spirit are the same, there are rules. You have free Will. It is a sin (against the Law) to impose your Will against someone else's Will. If you break a law, there is penance.

If you embrace the concept of reincarnation, then your suffering today could be punishment for a trespass upon someone's Will in the past. This is also called Karma.

You can, of course, appeal your punishment. This is called "prayer". Any prayer, done with sincerity, faith, and belief, will be granted.

Of course if you see someone that is suffering, you are free to help that person and relieve their suffering. That is the essence of Christianity.
