Hi, Why does everybody want to be listed by DMOZ.. I heard it didn't bring much traffic and that it's only because it's listed there it has a bit more value... But in my eyes it doesn't matter... it's even an ugly site in my vision, so can somebody please explain me why everybody talks about DMOZ? Greetz
Because it's a free directory with high traffic and pr which Google Directory uses as a source. Plus all the other sites and directories which use it's listings. Did I mention it's free.
Please check out this thread: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=1098881 Pay extra attention to what winifred gray says. Now that is certainly a plus! Though, to answer the original question... everyone talks about the ODP because a few years back, before Search Engines really took off, directories were about the only way to find any sites. The ODP was the biggest and the best... now not much has changes, well, by not changed much I mean, most of the sites listed are still mostly Geocities pages and many categories still have information in them that is seemingly relevant to the end user by being written before Yahoo or Google got popular.
Thanks for the great comment But still I won't list my sites.. as I think there is 'too much' people feeling bad they don't get listed I don't want to get to that point so Greetz and thanks again
There really is no reason to get miffed about not getting listed. I have submitted my sites to hundreds of free directories, many of which never got around to listing any of the sites I have submitted...seemingly do to the same issues as DMOZ (a lack of editors) and I didn't get bothered by them at all. I've also seen similar stories... submitting your site to the ODP takes no longer then submitting it to any other directory. What, 3 minutes of your time? No real issue if you are bothering with directories at all. So as the old saying goes, SUBMIT & FORGET! Then again, maybe that is wrong... there are several editors that do no use the submission queue at all, so in many cases NOT submitting has the exact same wait time
DMOZ is like university degree, can be very important or even critical for some websites, sometimes not very helpful, but you should definitely get one if possible. You can be kicked out. You could be invited in if you are very successful. Many people judge your site by dmoz listing, like some employers. Wow, this idea just popped up in my head, but the more I think about it, the more similar they are.
I think it's important for webmasters to know that a dmoz listing is not critical to a sites success in any way. If you're serious and are competing for high traffic positions that bring good money you need a diverse backlink profile of 100's or 1000's of links depending on the topic and its popularity. One link from dmoz will not make one bit of difference at that level. If you can get one great, but there is absolutely no need for one at all. I think it's also important to editors that webmasters understand this because it may slow down the amount of spam and/or deceptive practices that may occur due to a misunderstanding of the importance of a listing.
Yes, if that is the ONLY promotion of a small site, then a listing can be considered important... however, if that is the case, then there are deeper issues with the site & it's owner and DMOZ will not be doing any miracles. Yes it's worth the three minutes it takes to submit, though maybe its not worth the half hour/hour it tkes to read the guidelines (though that CAN help in many cases). Though beyond the submission process there is nothing left for the webmaster to do and once that is done, there is little left for DMOZ to do accept approve or reject the site.... in most cases there is no change to the site unless you can get a PR6-8 category nd that's the ONLY link the site has pointed too it
Yeah I submitted one of my sites, though I think I have a better chance on getting link on whitehouse.gov main page. I think I wanted my site to be listed more as a goal rather then any traffic, pagerank or serps.
