Honnestly being listed in DMOZ is moreso an honor then anything at this point. I don't think it has much value beyond that.
One of the main reasons to get listed is to get into the Google directory. Many DMOZ pages have PageRank 4, 5, 6 pages in which to get your site listed in. If your site is listed in a relevant category, you ALSO get a PageRank 4, 5, 6 link in the Google directory as well (and a bunch others). You are getting TWO very high quality links WITH relevancy to your website's main theme. Google gives more trust to pages listed on high PageRank pages like this and gives your site high relevancy in the search engine if your site is listed in a relevant category. This is one reason why editors and metas are corrupted. We all know if your site gets into a category related to a lucrative category, then you have a huge boost in the search engines and hence have a much easier time making big money. This is why people are willing to buy links and get in. Editors/metas/admins all know this as well and only the highest bidders can get in and becoming an editor in these categories to list your own sites require big money. That's why you usually only see editor and low quality sites listed.
Interesting. What do you consider a lucrative category? and what is a low quality site, in your eyes?
The worst part is that sometimes people actually believe this sort of garbage and then spruik about it as being a fact.
yeah and free beer tickets for half year , 2 coffee's , one croissant , even if you get the jackpot you can get a bunch of condoms
TOPIX is listed more then TEN THOUSAND times, and I'd wager very few if any were put there by a human hand. Its an affiliated site of a founding editor and goes against MANY of the guidelines of the ODP itself.
Listed over SEVENTEEN THOUSAND times. Google is only listed about 700 times or so. Just goes to prove that corrupted self-serving editors use DMOZ as their own personal marketing boost.
Lucrative categories include Gambling, Travel, Credit, Seo, Adult/Sex or areas where webmasters can more easily make huge amounts of money than others. For example, someone with a website ranking #1 in Google for the keyword "blackjack" can easily make over $50,000 a month in the gambling industry. So it's not hard to believe that an admin or big meta like Jim Noble would accept a $100,000 bribe from a heavy affiliate to make them an editor in the "blackjack" category, where they could list all their blackjack sites, link them all together with keyword relevancy, high authority pageranks and entry into the Google directory. Why would Jim Noble or any other meta give editorship out to free in a lucrative category when they can easily accept the money? How much do you want to bet that Jim Noble is a millionaire by "volunteering" in a "free" directory? Maybe some of the biggest affiliates with the deepest pockets pay annual "fees" to remain editors or edit-alls in the whole gambling category. I can't say I would blame them. If the big affiliate guys offered me $100,000, I would take it and wouldn't care about loosing my meta status. A smarter way is to give them the editorship under the condition that they develop mediocre sites (typical in DMOZ) and not too low quality of sites in order to not make it look too obvious. Then keep accepting bribes well into the future or pay off people that find out about these bribes to keep their mouth shut. Well, who's to say that the top guys aren't paying off employees at Google in order to keep DMOZ around (If Google stopped using DMOZ, DMOZ would be nothing). That may be one reason why DMOZ has been around way beyond it's time... Hell, apparently if one can get the #1 position in Google for the keyword "online poker", the site could easily be worth $10 MILLION. Lucrative categories are bound to have plenty of corruption and there are lots of people willing to pay big bucks to have the sole editorship of their very own "cheat codes" to get to the top of Google. Only the people with money can get into game here. http://www.here.org.uk/2007/05/10m-to-get-a-top-5-position-in-google-for-poker.html I would consider a low quality or mediocre site as one of the many that get thrown into DMOZ by these self-serving editors. Usually they are between 10 and 50 pages that can be built in a week and have nothing special to them. Usually the articles are bought through outsourcing. Other types of sites have like 100 word articles with lots of banners and they can get listed in DMOZ as well. Normally Google would not find anything unique with them, but because they are in DMOZ, they get extra boosts in pagerank and rankings and therefore Google looks a little higher on these sites. These low quality sites are usually all linked up to each other as well and owned by the same guy (at least many of the ones listed in DMOZ)
How does it prove that? All it proves is your failing to understand the guidelines that allow editors to do this.
the fact that it has 17,093 listings might even pass through some guideline hole deliberately left for such (ab)uses http://directory.domaintools.com/topix.com but it is more interesting that website was sold and then domain changed from .net to .com while any website being caught as sold here at DP or anywhere else is quickly delisted by metas and other suck-ups and left to rot in unreviewed
that's not an abuse man ! it's just a good site witch it's in fully guidelines accepted by them ! it's really useful for the users you can't remember witch sites are getting accepted on dmoz ? lol
yes topix is really useful to the users, I don't recall using it once in my life but it is important that they've removed my useless multitopic multilanguage 2400+ unique pages one of a kind on the net website
who cares if the editors/meta's saying is NOT good or they are saying IS good ! then they have right and we all must shut the fk up and leave with it , they have experience , they are smart , they are gorgeous and so on . because you are just another noob who don't know nothing and not have any experience and none care about your opinion , and other's have all those qualities witch you don't have . Understand the thing if the meta's / editors / senior editor's saying the sun is come from the west then they have damn it right and none have any damn right to say other things different than they have right ps. DMOZ listing are conform with the guidelines
Funny about that, i've used it once or twice. Nope, i've never used this site. The point being that just because a person hasnt used a site, this dosent make it any more useful, or un-useful. The reason behind Topix has been explained many, many times before.
yes but Topix has 17000+ deeplinks and who knows how many pages, my entire website has only 2400 pages which cover some very obscure things unlike Topix which cover everything and it is suppose to have over 400000 users so you would think there are people out there who actually use it regularly
No doubt people would visit your page, i had a look as i must admit to not seeing it before and if i was interested in that field, i would visit it again. Personally, info about wars depresses me, way too many in this world for my liking
