Why do you pay for links and how do you determine the price to sell at?

I already know a couple things that determine the worth of a link and why someone might by them:

Page rank, category of site (and perhaps traffic?)

Is someone primarily buying a link for the page rank stuff or to get some traffic? Say someone is selling a link on a PR5 page that has little traffic, but another person is selling a link on a PR3 homepage with a lot of traffic? Which do you go for?

I guess I'm just trying to figure out the best way to price links on my own site and what drives people to pay for them.

i.e. How much would you pay for a link on a PR 3 video game related site that receives over 10k uniques and over 600,000 page views?

IMO the link calculators aren't even CLOSE to accurate. They cant take into account many factors that you just cant "code" into an app. such as the industry, the willingness of the person to accommodate your needs, ...i could keep going on for days...

Short list of factors that gives your link more weight and more POWER:

    - # of external links on the page (the less the better)
    - # of quality backlinks that page has
    - age of the page
    - how close is the title tag to your anchor text (the closer the better)
    - are your links in the middle of content or on the footer of a bazillion pages across the site(the latter looks fake)

    etc. etc.

All this really depends on your industry, some cost more some cost less

You can use the current market demand as a gauge for your pricing :) Refer to our marketplace for more details.

Any link is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. I would do some research and see what others are charging and what success they are having selling them. Check in the marketplace and look at other similar sites to see if they list their advertising prices. Once you get a general idea, try to sell the links and see if you get any takers. If you don't, lower your price.

Make sure to honest up front about how long the ad will run and how many links you are selling. Nothing will burn your rep faster than selling a link and the person finding out after the fact that you are selling a whole bunch of links. The more you sell the less the worth of the links.

Footnote about the calculator: I played with it and it sayd MySpace is worth over $617,000. LOL I will go buy two spots right now LOL
