Why Do Websites Rely On Alexa?

I'm getting a bit aggravated. I want to set up Text Link Ads but they rely on Alexa to determine whether or not your site has enough traffic.
My friend has a PR3 and I have a brand new 1 month old website. I get the same amount of unique traffic as he does (we use Analytics) yet my site shows as little to no traffic and his is few hundred to a couple thousand.
He can use text link ads and I can't.
With Alexa being in accurate why do websites depend on it?

The same reason people use Paypal yet it sucks, there's too many people that worship Alexa like a religion your basically screwed if your rank is low when you try to sell advertising or sell the website.

The reason is because Alexa is a public way to view statistics of a website. Even though it may not be accurate it is a measurement tool.
