Why do we need to submit the URL to directories?

    Is the link from those directories increase your rank? or do people search those directories for information?

    Backlinks and improved ranking for some sites i mainly get from submitting to web directories.

    people would search those "big" or popular directories for information,
    as the listings are selected and quality. :)

    You can get backlinks for your sites using your chosen anchor text and surrounding text (description). If you are choosing categories correctly, it also means you are getting a relevant link from a page that has other sites similar to yours.
