Why Do Visitors Click On Ads?

I was wondering why visitors click on Adsense ads. Personally, I hate them, but I do click on a few ads every blue moon or so for a particular reason.

Here is why I think people click on ads:

1- Mistake. If you blend your ads beautifully, "mistake clicks" will happen more often than you realize. Visitors will assume that the links in the ads are links to more information on your site. You can increase the numbers of these clicks by doing everything in your power to make the dumb ads look like your content (positioning, colors, etc.).

2- Surfing. A lot of people just like to surf the net. They will hop from one link to another, with nothing in particular in mind. If you give them a link to click on, they will do it. These "clickers" really suck for advertisers as they almost never convert.

3- Webmasters. Let's say that you are looking into getting into the Free Credit Report ppc market. You want to check out your competition's ads and landing pages. What do you do? You click on their ads.

4- Stupidity. Want to get banned? Tell all of your family in your home that you aren't getting enough clicks. When you check the next day you might be surprised to find out that they started clicking on every ad you've got. There are also a ton of idiots that think they can click on their own ads via a proxy, or from a computer at their school.

5- Curious. Sometimes I am just curious about an ad. i know it's an ad, and I know I hate ads, but the title of the ad just makes me want to click on it so badly. I'm honestly curious about what I am going to see next.

6- Hungry. These are the best clicks for your advertisers, and ultimately for you too. These folks are hungry for more information, or to buy the product. You have done your job by wetting their whistle and leading them to the vendor/ advertiser, and now they want the rest of the story. If you do this well enough, you may find that advertisers will start competing to place their ads on your site.

    Did I miss any?

    :)

    You are partly correct.

Actually a visitor clicks on ad when he finds it relevant to his need to visit that particular page. Even if you blend your adsense ads look exactly like your content, visitors will not click it unless the ad is relevant to what they are looking for.

Like me, you don't like click on adsense ad is because you know that's an ad. It's may be only 25% of internet population that knows about google adsense and the rest will always click on ads unless they become vigilent after looking at those ads on almost every other website.

About stupidity, it's true that almost every novice adsense publisher does this, asking their friends, relatives to click on the ads which will eventually end up in a ban.

And there are people who know about adsense ads but still click on the ads because after all why advertiser paying for an ad because he has something to tell to the visitor. if the visitor finds it interesting, people will defintely keep clicking on those lovely adsense boxes.

    This is point #6- Hungry.

About visitors not clicking unless it is relevant, you are a bit off. That is what the other 5 points cover. I can make a page about "cakes" and have only ads about "diamonds". Yes, the ctr will be much lower, but I will get clicks. Why? Points 1-5.

That's #6- Hungry. You've done your job well, led the meat to the tiger, and now they are hungry to spend some dough/ read some more. That is exactly what every Adwords advertiser is praying that you send them.

But there are also image ads. In that case, it's usually because the ad gets the attention of the visitor, regardless of whether or not they had actually come to your site on a topic related to that ad.

Sometime when a site looks poor like some starving crackhead owns it, I give it a few clicks kind of like throwing the bum on the street some change. Lol

Not really, I have never clicked on adds except by accident.

Nice share. Most of the internet users dont know about adsense ads, they click on the ads thinking that it is part of the website and the people who are aware of ads dont click on ads (like me). Other reason for it is that sometimes we get something interesting in ads and the ad force us to click on it.

How long have you been getting away with it? How many clicks per day? I'm just curious.
