Ok, I think every webmaster here has his own hosting and yearly domain fee its not a problem. There is dozen free blog scripts you can use for that and they are really good. So what’s the reason to use the free blog service like blogspot or livejurnal?
I guess its just promotion. Why not have a blog on an established site? Its easy to do too. I have never used it myself personally but i can see why it might be attractive to some.
I used to have a very high traffic football videos site on blogspot ~ 6k uniques a day .. making me more than 1k usd a month !! BUT it was deleted by blogger, and from then on, i dont use freehost anymore. eh .. only use it to spam ^^
I could see how a free hosting provider could be very useful to get someone started. Many people who do it for recreation use them because they are free. It seems like you get a decent amount of promotion from being in the community of these too.

I know couple of blogs hosted by blogspot.com that make hell lot of money. One of them is a member of this forum. We tend to have this negative perception of blogs hosted at blogspot.com as they are also major sources of splogs within the blogsphere. I can't really remember where I found a study that link splogs with blogspot.com. But I'm sure there is a study about it done by US university.
I use it because its free and easy to use and blogs like http://postsecret.blogspot.com http://xiaxue.blogspot.com http://octpobb.livejournal.com are all in the top 100 for technorati and they didn't need to purchase their own domain. And also I chose blogger because I am not the smartest with computers. I just try to sign up with alot of computer forums with SEO stuff so I can learn a little more slowly.
Free some people hates spending extra $$$ , so they use free services... I used to use it some time ago...
its easy , its free , and perhaps google gives it a little more weightage in terms of searches as well.
You can use your own domain with blogspot. Best thing about blogspot: almost always up, can sustain hard visitor surges and bandwidth costs are 0.
OK, I can understand for the beginners but I see experienced webmasters using them. The most reason mentioned here is FREE, but who of us dont have webhosting with fantastico - 2-3 clicks to install wp blog with no extra payment and you have your own blog on second level domain with all hosting futures and freedom to advertise. Sell if you wish the whole website. The 3-rd level domain will never cost that much as your own. Is there better indexing on blogspot or gives more PR just as subdomain of big site?

I've never used it, but I can see why some people would. It's free, it's easy, and Google just might index it quicker because you don't have to "tell" Google that it exists since it's on their servers. I'm sure it's a popular choice among people just starting out, because there are no upfront costs. Some younger teenagers don't yet have credit cards.
