Why do they ask for W8 ?

    Hi,

    I am from India and I own an incentivised site http://www.whypayitsfree.com/

    At the moment, I joined about 2 publisher and they are asking for W8.. What is a W8 Basically ?

    I did some research and found that its basically informing IRS that money is leaving US.. So, Will they report to Indian Government or Will I have to go and report my income ?

    The reason companies ask you for the W-9 / W-8 is because they are required to notify the IRS if they send payments of $600+ within a year to independent contractors/affiliates/whoever.

    we are dealing with many a networks.. but never had thing like this W8.. i think it is taken into considration if the company is not well known

    That depends if the companies you're working with are based in the U.S.. I'm sure there are a few U.S. based companies that don't require you to submit the form, but most major U.S. companies will require you to send it before you're paid.

    Even CJ and Shareasale require a W8 form to be faxed to them before they pay you
