Why do these large companies do this?

Hello, when I go to search something in Google example progressive the paid link in the blue box coms up first, and it is the same link as the first search term. So progressive has to pay when you click the blue box but not the first link. No matter what link you click you go to the same site. Why do the companies do this, is it just their mistake?

Usually affiliates are not allowed to bid on the direct terms, you know what i mean? My best guess is they are just lazy and put in progressive in their adwords campaign ;p be it by accident, negligence, or just carelessness

I deal with a few companies who encourage trademark PPC bidding... it helps keep all of the slots going to them and not their competitors. Dunno about Progressive. If they don't allow trademark bidding and they didn't buy the top slot themselves.... who would have it? Geico? Not good...

True that, but thats why it should be more economic to just not allow trademark bidding.
