Why do some people not like to show their site on DP?

Discussion in 'General Marketing' started by nicknick, Oct 21, 2005.

I was reading through some posts and some members here are very hesitant in posting their URLs.

I was under the impression that it was good marketing to get your site out there.

There are comments such as "horror stories" but what can someone do if you run your site honestly? Is it just fear of people seeing techniques or trade secrets for SEO?

I was just wondering if anyone could shed some light on this.

    thanks.

My opinion is that it's a bit of paranoia. I mean, they're probably thinking that if people dont know what sites each other has, then they may give correct advice freely, but if you post your site then someone may find you to be a competitor and try and subtly hinder you (especially if you rank higher than them, lol "SERP envy" :p ), know who the competition is and thus keep an eye on them as they use the forum (ie, from their questions they could get an idea of what their strategy is, and thus plan accordingly) or something like that.

Many members found great niches and rather not share them and just keep them to them selves.

my hesitation is in the google florida update having the site posted in my sig etc managed to really hurt my rankings, as everyone was using forums to get lots of repetitive backlinks with anchor text and google cottoned onto it.

Theres also a danger that a competitor can search on our site name and within the first few pages come across my forum posts, giving them inside info onto our activities.

Competition!!! You got a unique site and you don't want 20 clones made. Look at that $1,000,000 image site for an example!!!!!!!

I highly doubt signature links in forums had anything to do with it. Google devalues links, they don't penalize sites for having them (IMO).

I think owning websites can be similar to owning a stock portfolio. You just don't disclose everything, and especially if you can a site generating big $$$ that others could easily duplicate.

    I see...

I was putting my sites in the signature to get exposure. I did have 4FYB2R PM asking if one of my sites had good traffic and if it made money. He never wrote back after I PMed him. Guess he was just fishing for info?

Maybe I should remove the sites from the signature but I can always use Copyscape to monitor if anyone is copying our content. I do that about once every couple of weeks or so. Has anyone here had a bad experience with this type of thing?

I would think the big reason would be a competitor associating your posts with those sites you link to and tracking what you do to rank well through the advice you give in forums. Personaly I don't care about that. You never know when I am being serious or not. ;)

Yes, there are a lot of reasons. In my case I only place in my sig sites that are webmaster related, in order to promote them a bit.

I've seen though that if you are targetting very easy phrases a link from this forum can get your site to the top.

Another potential factor is if your site(s) are running adsense. You irritate the wrong person with a smart-ass remark, and the next thing you know someone logging in from a library in Hoboken has clicked your ads 4.6 billion times and you have to deal with google click fraud issues.

at one point I had a site that ranked for a bunch of seo terms, some other seo ass clown was basically telling me that I have no clue what I am talking about

So me be the dumb reactionary I am, posted my rankings to show of my mad skillz, shortly after all my site dropped for all the rankings I bragged about

Since then I rarely show any of my urls

You really wanna know why? Just read this thread:

    http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=31769&highlight=effort

This guy posted his site and was hounded so badly that he was kicked out of Adsense.

I completely agree that what the guy did was wrong, but it's still the main reason that I prefer to remain under the radar. If there is something wrong with my sites, I want Google telling me, not 100 webmasters that are waving pitchforks and broomsticks. :)
