what exactly cause serps to go down?

Can someone help me on this!

If links to site loose page rank or stop linking to site they lower rank. Google changes rank for site or mutiple things. Just work on getting links and making new content to keep site ranked high.

You're a webmaster and you're optimizing your site, right?

Well there will probably be another 10 or 20 other webmaster's doing exactly the same.

Adding new content, working on building links and promoting their site via advertising campaigns. Everything is changing.

Ah, in this case it sounds like you've been penalized.

Have you been buying or selling links?

You have probably just been over-ranked by other websites. It happens all the time. You will just have to keep up with the competition.

How many? More than a few and it's possible - but unlikely - it's still punishment given Google's latest missive on link exchanges.

On the other hand, it's damn near impossible to outrank somebody else for their domain name, let alone for 40 to 50 pages to do it. They're probably doing some kind of large scale update ... these things happen from time to time. As they reshuffle their databases, some pages can seem to vanish for a few days, and then come back as mysteriously as they left. That happened to my Webmaestro page for about half a week.

If you were loosing rank for keywords and not your domain name, I'd say incoming links had lost their value, so you fell backward a few pages. But, if you haven't done anything blatant that could get you banned, it's probably a short term data issue.

Would you consider your link exchanges excessive?

You may find the following blog post by David Airey useful. I hope it helps.

same has happened to me for my keywords, but it appears that the "competition" really hasn't done anything to improve... they just exist, and outrank me.. where as I'm trying to update my site every few days.

Google's like us sometimes. Just wakes up and yawns and says... "I'm too tired to go to work today..."
