Why do Republicans Like Sarah Palin?

    I honestly don't understand.

Can someone tell me what it is that they like so much about this woman they didn't even know a month ago?

I've heard her being called the "future of the Republican party" and "a shoe in for the 2012 nomination".

    Seriously?

My down and dirty: The GOP is no longer the party of Barry Goldwater, but the party of those he despised, the far evangelical right. They have effectively hamstrung the party, and forced McCain, already weak with both fiscal and "cultural" conservatives, to take her, as she is the exemplar of their feverish ideals: short on thought, long on zeal.

What many find dangerous, she, and the cadre of fire-breathers who worship people like her, find comforting: The end of curiosity, the bliss of dogma.

God , I hope so. That would be great if she is the best that they can do in 2012. Let's hope she keeps up on current events and reads the constitution by then.
Yes, exactly. She is the "Mother Theresa" they have been looking for to save their sinner souls from all the ills that they preach abstinence .
If you haven't seen it yet, you have to watch Olbermann's rant on Palin. It is absolutely brilliant. He rips her a new one. "Say it ain't so Gov., Say it ain't so.."

Me neither, but I'm just a European. Maybe it's those high priced glasses. Or the high hells. Who knows?

The McCain camp has railed from the beginning on the media's "unfair" treatment of the "wilting violet" that is McCain's running mate. So while she's foaming at the mouth, while this "Good Christian" is lying through her teeth and literally fomenting hatred, the truly psychotic mindset inherent to her belief in a "divine mission" is being neglected. It is important to keep in mind that this idiot once praised her pastor, Pastor Muthee, for having a special connection to God, and it was on the basis of his "special power" that she won the Governorship.

For another example of the mindset at play, well:

[FYI - ignorance is a wonderful thing. There is no God "Hindu," nor "Buddha," at least in all but the most esoteric strains of Buddhist thought - and even in them, it isn't the man Buddha but a kind of "Buddha principle" that is considered eternal].

Just watched the Olbermann piece. Agree with you - it was spot on, and brilliant. I am sure it will be dismissed as mere rant, polemic - but there is nothing in there that wasn't on target. A great commentary, thanks for the heads up.

Here is my take. I don't think Obama is particularly brilliant IQ-wise. He is a great orator. There is no taking that away from him.

It is a fatal mistake to elevate ANY leader or politician to any position other than this......they are human beings who are running for political office. Being human beings, they will be less than perfect. That goes for ANY politician, including Obama.

Do I really believe everything that ANY of them have to say? No!

I think that they may sincerely believe in what they are saying, but it really is more complicated to get those policies from the idea state to functioning in the real world.

Take the economic mess with the housing fiasco. Who was leading the oversight committee? Barney Frank.....http://www.boston.com/bostonglobe/e...ngerprints_are_all_over_the_financial_fiasco/

Now, where was he during all of this? In 2004, there were committee meetings with many sounding alarms about Fannie and Freddie........if you watch the tapes of those meetings, what do you see? ALL of the members of the committee shooting down any notion that there is a problem with FM and Freddie.......

THAT is troubling. It doesn't matter what party you belong to......it should have everyone demanding that he be investigated.....

For the other Democrats, Republicans and Independents.........was anybody listening? It appears as if everyone just sat on their hands and so ok.........there really is no problem because Barney and friends said so...shame on them!

Sarah is just not drab and can be charismatic just like Barack. That is what may appeal to many.

What I see with Barack is many elevating him to a status other than the fact that he is a human being who is running for office. He is no less perfect than anyone else.

Same for Sarah or anyone else.

Why is this important? Because when we look to people as "the Messiah" as the idiot Farrakhan called Obama, then we lose our objectivity. No matter who is in office or running, it is our objectivity that keeps a check on someone's policies or behavior.

Here is a test for you. Let's see how many people flame me for stating my views here. Olbermann.........how about giving ALL sides to issues? He is not reporting the news, per se. His show is an EDITORIAL on HIS views......not the same thing as objective news.

I was watching him the other night, and man........no hint of "news" only HIS view of the world. And that is fine, as long as it NOT passed off as NEWS!

Frankly, I like him better as a sports-guy..........

So, let's see how the responses to this post go......will there be true point and counter point, or will it simply be more of the same.........vitriol and nasty responses?

Oh, I do realize what I stated about Frakakan (sic).....I stand by it. HIS record speaks for itself.

Lastly, do any of you that responded or even the one who started this thread really care what a Republican or anyone else thinks?

    I honestly doubt it.

I have found that it is nearly impossible to offer a different viewpoint other than what the Olbermann crowd has to present without it descending into something that does NOT resemble true spirited debate.

If many of you wonder why hardly anyone will respond to these types of threads, there is your answer.

I respect your viewpoint, but do you really respect the rights of others to exercise their rights to speak their minds?

I hope so, because that is what being Liberal is supposed to be about. And no, I am not a member of the Democratic Party, far from it. :)

    @niche:

I'll respond to a couple of points. To say it generally, and personally, you bet - I can respect vastly divergent viewpoints, so long as they are grounded in an investigation of the truth. The pablum that passes for "conservative" in so many of the discussions I've seen - in the national political culture, down to here, as a microcosm - is anything but principled. Basically, Obama the Al-Qaeda Manchurian Candidate/Black Nationalist/Communist/Traitor/Terrorist Running Dog, instead of a principled discussion of classical Liberalism v. classical liberalism.

Hence, why it is called commentary. It is intended to make a point of view known, based on a reading of the facts. On the video posted in this thread, I challenge anyone to debunk any point raised by Olbermann as untrue. It is heated - why I called it polemical - but it is also on target. The anger felt is genuine, and justified. Palin was a nothing propelled to the stage for no other reason than that she embodies the views of a narrow minded bunch of political misfits - the very folks Barry Goldwater told to fuck off, to be honest.

Absolutely. If you see a Republican with principled arguments to make, let me know, and I'd relish the opportunity to engage in a principled discussion (as many of the RP'ers have poised, to be honest, as I have come to know them). All I've seen, for quite some time, is a deep perversion of the party of Barry Goldwater.

His academic credentials are impeccable. All signs point to Obama having a well above average IQ.

Olbermann is an editorial guy rather than a news guy. He's the Hannity of MSNBC. Except I actually think Olbermann has more talent, the guy is a really good writer even if he's using it to be a schill for the left.

For the same reasons the crazies like Ron Paul, every group seems to have a person that they identify with. Republicans Identify with Palin.

It's a serious question, Sonig. What's a Republican, to you?

I ask, because Barry Goldwater disavowed the GOP of the last several years, for the reasons I've mentioned.

    Was he not a Republican?

Yes, she is pro life, and likes guns. Great.

Her "Energy" experience was a Governor appointed post which she quit.

What else does she bring to the table ?
Seriously. Does she have a thought in her head that wasn't put there in the last 4 weeks by the party ?
I'll bet you my B. of A. account that she didn't know who William Ayers, Jeremiah Wright, or any other of the people that she keeps dwelling on, was 4 weeks ago.

She is our only hope in winning this election. If we have chosen someone else, we wouldn't have had a better chance.

To the American people now, change is more important than experience.

Because GOP people are cowboys, with guns and all that. They go to a saloon to fight and stuff. Since she promised to do war with Russia as president, the GOP pushed McCain to go that way, just in case he'll die. Then, they couldn't be happier to hear that if she become president, she'll go to Pakistan to hunt terrorist, whatever Pakistan says. So, all these cowboys just see some good entertainement right there.
McCain elected and dead, the End is next...
