Why do reciprocals of keywords rank differently?

    I have two main keywords for my site, which when put together make my main keyphrase. I optimized for keyword 1 keyword 2. But I rank higher (by 10 positions) if I type keyword 2 keyword 1 into the SE. Why is that? Does it have something to do with 2 before 1 being less competitive?

    Well I never thought about that
    but it makes sense that the phrase that you rank higher is slightly less competitive.
