I find that most spam gets weeded out pretty well automatically by wordpress and blogger these days.

I want comments because it makes my blog seem more popular and it will make people want to leave a comment and get in on the discussion. They will then come back to see if anyone responded to what they said.

I also want comments because it's fresh content added to my site that I don't have to write.

Since I re-enabled comments on my favorite blog and installed akismet and other measures suggested by members here I have been getting a lot of really good comments and very few spam ones.

Comment section, is something, which separates a website from a blog. It builds the community, it facilitates the discussion.
    Use Akismet for blocking spam.

The more comments you get, that means that more readers are joined to reading your blog and expressing themselves.

Why have comments on your posts? Answer is simple, to know that someone is actually reading what you write, instead of making you feel like you are writing to an empty wall.

I haven't written on walls in a long time :p.

My current blog isn't really an interactive blog. I have another domain that I am going to set up to be interactive and will require opinions of others. Having the moderation on is great, but that's a lot of work if you get tons of spam replies. I was looking at Shawn Hogans comment on his blog about getting thousands of spams and I think I would really lose it if I had to deal with that much.

    i love comments.
some people adjust how good our blog by looking how many comments do we have.
it doesn't matter actually, but that would be useful if we have an advertising page on our site.
    well.. IMHO

Akismet and a recentish version of Wordpress should cut 99% of spam out.

Personally I like comments as they give a feeling of life to a blog, provide effective feedback and (perhaps most importantly from an SEO perspective) free content...

Here are the the ultimate 3 plugins to reduce WordPress comment spam:
    Akismet
    Comment Timeout
    Simple Trackback Validation

By using those 3 plugins and the latest version of WordPress my comment spam has been reduced significantly.

I too like to let my visitors add their 2 cents. It creates a feeling of community with my readers :)

They think that blog comments can make your site crawl often by search engine.
