Why do people use "ur" and other shortenings?

I really can't understand why so many people use "ur" and other shortenings. It seems VERY unprofessional to me and makes it seem like the poster is inexperienced and young. What are "ur" thoughts?

    I agree completely.

I am guilty of it sometimes, but only by innocent mistake. I'll type your instead of you're, and other dumb stuff like that.

Makes my blood boil when I see "LOL", not sure why. I think I just assume there is a 12 year old typing on the other end. Is it just me or do most uses of it not make sense.

Example: Do you think this backlink is a good buy or a waste? LOL

On a side note, you ever talk to anyone that ends sentences with the word "so"?

I think it's absolutely ridiculous, and I find it very hard to take someone seriously in a business exchange if that sort of 'spelling' exists.

Thank goodness for the FireFox spell checker!

well you can tell someone's a teenager in two ways (not always foolproof but has a 86% chance of success):

    1) uses short hands often.
    2) types without capitalizing.
    3) looks for easy ways to make money (example includes "let's click each other's ads!")

    :D

To save time. In a mobile phone, it is easier to type in shorthand.

I can see (and I actually do) use shortenings in text messages, but in a professional business and internet setting like digitalpoint, it doesn't make sense to me.

Well, I actually think it does reflect in how old the person is if he/she uses "ur" and "lmao" and things like that. Normally, those people are teens. Very rarely do adults do that.

That's not true at all. A lot of you old guys are out of touch with reality, lol. Those of us who grew up in the internet generation (i.e. mid-to late Generation X, Generation Y) are mostly adults now, and use this phraseology seamlessly with our normal adult conversations on the internet.

Oh my word - I'm going blind just looking at all that crazy text talk!
The worrying thing is, certainly here in the UK, some school kids actually believe that your is spelled 'ur' and people is spelled 'ppl' etc. Even more worrying is that they write this crap in the answers to their English exam papers! We're destined to be a nation of brain dead morons.

    Oh noessss111!!!!

The problem is that people talk so much about how they want intelligent people, and intelligent leadership... but the most intelligent minds of our times have always been people that the general populace has always hated...human beings have always been stupid. The highest 3 IQ score holders for US Presidents, in order: 1. Harry Truman 2. Richard Nixon 3. Herbert Hoover.

All 3 of them are heroes and geniuses in their own right, but were unpopular because of circumstances associated with them. Eisenhower is #4, too.
