when even Google are admitting that generally whoring your website address on every directory will not work as well for you?

I'm not criticising but I want to be sure I don't just submit to every Tom, Dick and Harry directory out there and not be able to undo it.

Thanks for any sensible answers in advance!

Web directories spreads PR and help Advertisings, furthermore you can get lots of relevant anchor text by submitting to web directories, if youre good it can helps your SERPS!

Submitting is not important but is essential.

Just like directory submission, putting link in signature helps you in promoting your site, spreading inbound links and even getting PR.

Directory submissions do help in getting some traffic to your site, especially if you add them to a niche category / sub-category.

Also, these links also help on other search engines, as they help increase your popularity, including MSN and Yahoo :)

link please where GOOGLE admitted this :)

BTW if you are already doing this you will know the results and i dont get why this question arises. :)

    Do one simple example :
Get 2 new sites and just develop Site#1 , and do directory submissions and Link building for Site #2 , you will have the answer for your question.

hey BTW you can also submit to PR0 directories too , dont forget every PR6/7 directory was PR0 once :) and people submitted links when it was PR0 too ;)

If you're implying that whoring out links will work against your site then that would mean that competitors could backlink your site to HURT your Google results.

Either way directories would effect SERP results.
