Why Do People Say PR is Useless?

Discussion in 'Google' started by rkquest, Jun 11, 2007.

People say you shouldn't bother with your PR. But when you're selling links, your potential clients look at your site's PR right? When you're submitting your site to a directory or looking for link exchange partners you look at that site's PR and the PR of the page where you're site will be linked, right?

So how come people say don't bother with PR? Just wondering..

PR is important. However, you don't see your real PR, you get a snapshot once every 3-4 months. If you're looking for SERP PR won't be as important as the theme of the links. Basically, PR should give you wide idea regarding to the site quality.

Three or four years ago, you could buy a link from a PR8 site and see your page shoot up to the top, even for competitive keywords. Today, this is no longer possible, which leads people from the old times to say PR is useless.

I also agree that PR is an indicator of relevance.
I use the PR of the homepage as a coarse indicator of the TrustRank of the site. If a site has high TrustRank, PageRank of specific pages are not that important; it is better to have a link in a page with low PR and high TR than vice-versa.

PR has nothing to do with relevance.

Many times because they are just repeating what they have heard before, and think it makes them sound smart.

    They use logic like this:

"I heard that at one time having high PR meant having high serps. Well, I have a PR3 site that ranks for [some obscure keyword], and it even outranks some PR6 sites!"

They ignore the fact that the PR6 sites outrank them for thousands of other keywords that people actually want to rank for, etc.

PR isnt usefull , its just a snapshot and then even one that doesnt displays all the website criteria you want to know .
well you can see if the site is alive , a PR 10 site will not be a localsite of the neighbours girl showing off her cats and dogs . but a PR0 can be a place to find the best things you where looking for (that lovely neighbour girl)

if PR was anygood then the Serps would represent that . and they dont :) nuff said

if its useless go look at the pricing in the link sales section. then come back and tell me what a PR8 link goes for compared to a pr0. thats not useless, thats real money.

PR is not as important in an overall picture. A good SERP for your targeted keywords is all that matters. As some of the members have mentioned, PR is an important factor to consider when purchasing text links.

I would say nobody would bother with his site's PR if the traffic is good.

PR is not that important as much as traffic. It all comes in end to the traffic. And after that it all comes to the revenue.

    It is meaningless.
My PR0 is Alexa 200K with tons of traffic and income and links.
My PR3 is a test page where I try PHP scripts. No links, No advertising, no nothing, and the only unique/day is me...
Even better, it is a PR3 at www. mysite .com/myPHPtestingpage.php
while www. mysite .com is PR0 itself...

It is not very useful for SERP, however, if you are planning to sell links or exchange links then it is very important. The point is, what is the point of your website? Is it a useful site full of content or is it just a site made for Adsense or to sell links?

If you are looking at making a quality site, then traffic and Serp is most important, if you are looking to sell links and get money quick then sell the site, PR is very important.

It all comes down to what your goals as a webmaster is!

See, some of those statements prove you don't know what you are talking about.

What is that makes you think that just because you don't have a clue about PR that it is meaningless?

It all depends on what you are planning to do with the site. If you are planning to sell links, exchange links, I believe PR is very important.

If you are looking to sell products, use click ads than you need tons of qualified traffic. By getting tons of traffic from the search engines the PR will come in time.

When people talk about PR being useless they are talking about for SEO.

At best PR is a tie break factor, And that's real PR, Not this phony toolbar PR that isn't used to anything in the algo, Ever.
Real PR is one factor in a list of over 200. It is used, But so are the other 199+ factors.

Another thing people get confused about is the cause and effect.
Does a good site get high PR? Yes. because it gets backlinks.
Is a site with high PR necessarily a good site? No, Not necessarily.

The PR isn't the cause the the good serps, It's an effect of the backlinks.

Wait till you try to get your ecommerce site fully indexed and not 95% supplemental with 75,000 products. PageRank is a little more than worthless then.

PageRank is not worthless, and I'm not just talking about link sales here. Can a PR0 page outrank a PR4? Yes, that's been cited 30,000 times before, but it's not an argument for PR is worthless.

For me, the most important thing is to at least give my pages a fair shot in the search results, and that means that they need to be crawled more than once a decade and the data shouldn't be compressed beyond recognition, which requires the page to be in the regular index. PageRank is important for that.

Concentrate on the SERP, nowadays the more value goes to the SERP for competetive keywords than PR.

PR is just a green bar on top of your browser.
