I have noticed that people perfer manual submissions to automatic or sem-automatic submissions. Anyone know why this is?

    yea its because of control
least you can give the submission a check over when you do it manually
if its auto then your site can go into the wrong category or you may notice that the site isnt relevant etc

What about semi-automatic submitters where you choose the category and the rest is done for you since in every place you are typing everything over and over again. Why wouldn't you perfer that over total manual?

manual is the way to go.

this way you can check the category you are submitting to.
there are most of the times a few options where to submit.

Manual submission gives guarantees quality, if you use automated submission there's a risk the software you're using won't find the necessary category and submit your link to the wrong section where it will be deleted from by directory mods.

By doing the manual submission you can select the proper category for your site and then you can submit your site.

All the directories on the web is not having same kind of category structure...so by doing the manually submission you can browse to your category and then submit your site.

    :)

It's because no website owner wants bots on their sites! if you use automated scripts/softwares for submissions then directory owners will ban your site! that's why manual is preferred.

Manual submissions will lead to a much higher rate of acceptance. With semi-automatic submissions it's easy for mistakes to slip in, but it's less likely to be over something fundamental such as the url. You'd be surprised how many people submit urls with obvious typos.

Possible typos should always be checked though, the spelling in a submission can often be correct for the country their from.

I know your referring to URL's having typos of course, but a general thought on things like this.

    Customise
    Customize

    Which one is correct? :)

    Or even Custom Eyes, lol

I use the firefox form filler plugin. Makes things a lot quicker, but I can still see what info is actually being submitted.

As a directory owner I prefer manual submission because I actually have a human looking at my site. As a submitter I like manual because it gives me more control over the process.

It is common belief that automated / semi-automated submissions may not be done to best possible category. With manual submissions you can submit your site to deepest category.

Another thing is that with automated submissions people tend to overdo things and submit to thousands of directories in a couple of days which may not be the best link building approach.
