Why do people never read past the OP when replying to a thread?

I'm trying to figure out the logic here, if somebody posts a question or makes a statement and starts getting responses, what is the point of only replying to the OP after that?

There's hundreds of examples of this every day and it drives me up the wall trying to figure this out.

It's really annoying when the conversation switches to a different topic entirely and then some idiot comes in and replies to the OP without reading the rest of the thread.

    Why do people do this?

A lot of people don't want to spend the time reading the whole thread. Or, in some cases, they may not really be interested in the new topic - they just want to put out their opinion of the original topic for some reason.

Increase post count is the only thing that comes to mind when people repeat what was already said.

Why do people switch subjects in the thread.. When I read a thread topic, I click in it because I would like to comment on the topic at hand, not other posts that got off subject. You know?

Because it's what you're supposed to do. Discuss the main topic.

Often they are lazy, hence the reason for all the echoes. It'll be rewarded with an infraction if done too much.

I admit I am sometime guilty of this offense, but for very long threads I just reply what comes to mind :D
